It was earlier known by several other names like Lapangan Gambir, Lapangan Ikada, Lapangan Merdeka, Lapangan Monas and Taman Monas.

√ Ragunan Zoo
Ragunan zoo may not be as grand as zoos in other capital cities, but it may still be a worthile excursion. Visitors will find the Ragunan Zoo appealing because of its convenient location in South Jakarta and its impressive breadth of animals on display. The zoo is home to over 3,000 of animals, including over 60 endangered or threatened species. Here you will have the opportunity to see several species of birds, schmutzerreptiles, fish, and mammals. The zoo was initially a wildlife reserve set up voluntarily by a group of flora and fauna lovers in 1864. The zoo originally was located at Cikini till 1964. After the zoo premises were shifted to a different location for expansion, it was reopened again in 1966. Ragunan zoo is open every day between 7 am and 5 pm. Feeding time is around 11.00 am, every Wednesday for komodos, every Wednesday and Saturday for crocodiles, and everyday for most birds and other animals.
