Thaipusam is a festival that is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Murugan, or Kartikeya, the younger son of Lord Shiva. It is observed as the day of penance and the devotees wear the fakir dress and beg for alms. The collected alms are donated as a charity in nearby temples. Some ardent devotees pierce their body with sharp objects and miraculously they do not bleed.
