Guru Purnima is celebrated on the full moon day of Ashad according to the Hindu calendar. The festival falls in between the month of July and August annually. The occasion commemorates with the offering of Puja (worship) to the Guru. The Sikh festivals are usually associated with their Spiritual Gurus. The concept behind the celebration of Guru Purnima is that like the moon on its Purnmashi shines by the reflection of the sun in the same way the disciples also dazzle through the teaching of their Guru and attain the ultimate goal of their life.
The Sikhs also celebrated this day as the beginning of harvest season. They pray the God and consider this day to be heralding the setting of rains. Rain is of utmost importance to the farmers as it is the center of all farming activities. The Sikh community remembers all their Gurus on this day. They launch a procession on this day with all religious fervor and enthusiasm. The procession is led by the leaders of the community and ends at the Gurudwaras. They also organize community lunch known as “Langar” at every nook and corner of the city or town.
Guru Purnima is also celebrated by Hindus as the mark of the birth of Guru Ved Vyasa who composed the epic Mahabharata.
