Introduction
Guru Ravidas Jayanti marks the celebration of Guru Ravidas’s Birthday. The Jayanti is observed on 21st February each year. Guru Ravidas was born in the village of Sir Govardhan in Varanasi in the year 1376. He belonged to a Harijan Family. But his pious discourses made him into revered Guru respected across all religion. Most of the times, he used to mediate on the banks of holy Ganga. He was the epitome of communal harmony who fought against the evils and injustice of the society at his time.
Celebration
The followers of Ravidass known as Ravidasis celebrate his Jayanti with great fervor and excitement. The occasion commemorates with Akhand Path. The Nishan Sahib; the flag of Sikh is changed ceremonially followed by a special Arti and Nagar Kirtian is performed with the portrait of Guru Ravidas. He is also ceremonially worshipped in the Gurudwaras by his devotees. The special feasts and programs are also held by the volunteers in the remembrance of the great saint and poet. At Varanasi, the birth place of the Guru, the festival is celebrated with extra fervor and devotion.
