Introduction
Guru Tegh Bahadur was the ninth Guru of the Sikhs. He was the famous saint and warrior who fought for the cause of Sikh religion. He became Sikh Guru on 20 March 1665. The name Tegh Bahadur (mighty of the sword) was given to him because of the valor he shown during the fight with the Mughals. The Guru was beheaded in public at Chandni Chowk by the Mughal Empire for not accepting Islam.
Celebration
On this day the Sikh community remembers his contributions and teachings for the benefit of the society in general and Sikh in particular. The occasion is marked with the Puja, Bhajan and Kirtan of the revered Guru who led his life for the future generations of the Sikh. A procession in the memory of Guru Tegh Bahadur accompanying the band of signers, 'Gatka' teams (Martial Arts) display the art of swords and the devotees chanting hymns of Guru Granth Sahib. People go to Gurudwaras and offer worship to his portrait. Langar is also held by the devotees and Gurudwaras propagating the concept of Bhakti to the Guru and Service to the poor.
