Month of Fasting & Grief

Muharram is taken as the first Muslim month according to an Islamic calendar. This month is associated with varied auspicious events. This festival is observed in the tenth day of this month that marks the day of grief. In the month of Muharram, fasting is advocated. Though, fasting is not considered obligatory, but the one who fasts of his own will is believed to receive rewards from Almighty. However, fasting on tenth day of the month of Muharram called Ashura, is sure to render good rewards.

Importance of Ashura

  1. Observe fast on the tenth day.
  2. Give charity.
  3. Recite Surah Ikhlas atleast 1000times.
  4. To put Surma in eyes.
  5. Take a bath.
  6. To cut nails.
  7. Establish friendly ties with enemies.
  8. Visit the sick.
  9. Visit shrines of Awliyas and grave of Muslims.
Customs

As it is considered as a day of mourning, shais wear black dress during Muharram. In order to express their feelings of grief, people inflict wounds upon themselves by using metal chains. There are some remarkable stories associated with the festival of Moharram.
