Introduction
The festive season of Ramdan begins in the ninth month of Muslim calendar, the month of Ramdan. It is considered as the most significant months of Islamic calendar as the Quran or Koran was disclosed to Muhammad.
Fasting
Muslims observe the month of Ramdan by fasting rigorously in order to attain purification of body and soul and come close to divine God. Every Muslimn above the age of twelve years is expected to fast during Ramdan month. The religious act of fasting is called as “Sawn”. The meal is taken before the sun rises and the fast is broken after the sunset with the meal that is called iftar.
Taboos
Some of the activities that are strictly prohibited during this season are smoking, drinking, eating and sexual activities. The period of Ramdan is marked by worship and earnest prayers. Muslims go to mosque and spend many hours reading Quran. To aid poor and giving food to them is the special way to honor this festival.
