About
| | About | | This is another temple built by Kempe Gowda and is natural monolith carved cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It attracts thousands of devotees every year in January on Makar sankranti Day when the sunrays fall on the Sivalinga between 17.00 hrs and 18.00 hrs. passing between the horns of the Nandi.
It is known for its four monolithic pillars and rare idol of Agni, the God of fire.
This cave temple witnesses a unique phenomenon that speaks volumes for the architectural and astronomical skills of ancient sculptors. In January (Makara Sankranthi day) every year, a ray of sunlight passes precisely through the horns of the stone bull outside the temple illuminating the deity (Shiva Linga) inside the cave.
Situated in Gavipuram-Guttahalli, about 3 km from the City Market, Gavi Gangadhareswara Cave Temple is one of the ancient temples cut out in rocks probably in the 9th century. Kempe Gowda renovated it. There is an image of Agni, the only one of its kind probably in south India. There is also an image of Shakti Ganapathi with 12 hands to the left of the main entrance. There are four monolith pillars representing Damaru, Thrishula and two fans in the courtyard. | |
