It is a magnificent hilltop fortress, and is situated halfway between Aurangabad and Ellora caves. Bhilama Raja of the Yadava Dynasty built the fort in 1187. It was also known as Devagiri or Hill of the Gods. It gained fame as the place selected by Mohammad Tughlak also called Mad Sultan of Delhi who wanted to shift his capital here and renamed it as Daulatabad or City of Fortune. Mohammad Tughlak force-marched all his subjects but after 17 years marched them back to Delhi. Thick walls spiked gates, steep graveled slide ways and a deep moat surround the fort. Chand Minar tower and Chini Mahal where the last king of Golconda was imprisoned for 13 years until his death are must see for tourists.
