Chikmangalur district of Karnataka is also known as the land of coffee. The name literally means ‘Younger Daughter’. It was given as dowry to the younger daughter of Rukmangada, the legendary chief of Sakrepatna.
As per census 2011, a total of 1,18,496 people reside here.
Official language of the district is Kannada.
Climate & Geography
Chikmangalur is located in the foothills of Mullayanagiri range. It is at a high altitude of 1090 meters. This place has a pleasant climate throughout the year. Both summers and winters are moderate here.
For reaching by air, the nearest airport is 170km away in Mangalore. The district got a new railway line in 2013 which facilitates daily passenger trains from Shimoga via Kadur. NH 173 passes through here making it accessible by road. There are plenty of bus services to and from this place. The place can be roamed around in taxis or auto rickshaws.
