Chikmangalur is located in the foothills of Mullayanagiri range. It is at a high altitude of 1090 meters. This place has a pleasant climate throughout the year. Both summers and winters are moderate here.

For reaching by air, the nearest airport is 170km away in Mangalore. The district got a new railway line in 2013 which facilitates daily passenger trains from Shimoga via Kadur.
