The lake has been a site visited by migrating waterbirds for many years. It was made a sanctuary in 1976. The natural freshwater lake with an average maximum depth of only 3 m was formed in the geologically recent past in silts deposited by the Krishna and Godavari rivers. It shrinks dramatically in the dry seasons. Supporting a wide variety of aquatic plants, the State Government has accepted that protective conservationist measures need to be taken if the lake is to survive. The lake remains an important wintering area of ducks.
