About Fuerteventura
Overview: Fuerteventura, a Spanish island, is one of the Canary Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa. With1, 660 km², it is the second largest of the islands. The island, with the oldest history has the longest beaches of the entire archipelago, of wonderful fine sand. Only a narrow channel separates Fuerteventura from the African continent. It is a paradise for spending holidays at the beach. There are great beaches even very close to the islands capital, Puerto Rosario.
There is an area for younger children with slides and lockers provided. Tourist Attractions - Best Places to visit: There are wonderful places to visit in Fuerteventura which includes the Island of Fuerteventura itself. Some of the places are listed below : √ Ajuy : - Ajuy is a small village on the West coast of Fuerteventura. The village is most visited because of the caves that are to be found a short walk from the town. √ Caleta de Fuste : - It is a purpose built holiday resort. It has been created around the original cove, because it offers a safe, sheltered environment for beach activities. √ Nuevo Horizonte : - Visitors appreciate Nuevo Horizonte for the relaxing break that they get, a short distance away from the touristier town of Caleta. However, these days Nuevo Horizonte is fast becoming the place to be! √ Corralejo : - Corralejo is a tourist resort situated at the northern end of Fuerteventura. There are many more splendid tourist places in Fuerteventura which include Cocosol, Caleta Paraiso, Gran Tarajal, Lajares, Lobos, La Oliva and so on. Entertainment: → Nightlife : - Corralejo offers many live music venues, which are open until the early hours, as well as many English and Irish pubs. Lively venues can be found on the waterfront, many of which hold themed nights with live music. The Italian Jazz Café is a very popular venue with both locals and tourists and has performances by excellent jazz bands. Caleta de Fuste has a more sedate nightlife scene, but is home to Piero’s Music Café, which is a pub hosting six different entertainment shows including a hypnotist, karaoke and cabaret. Children are welcome provided they are accompanied by adults. → Music : - Puerto del Rosario is home to many concerts including a jazz and traditional music festival. If you are a lover of jazz, you will be pleasantly surprised at the number of live jazz concerts there are. There are also numerous local flamenco performances at many bars and other live music entertainment such as karaoke. Festivals:
Food: Because of the hot climate Fuerteventura's cuisine is quite simple and yet extremely tasty. Obviously the most common food is fish which is generally served up with locally produced sauces and flavorings. A lot of dishes served are centuries old such as 'gofio amasado' this is made from a doughy mixture of gofio (like a grain flour) water, milk, broth, potatoes, honey and wine. This is then served in a leather or fabric bag called a 'zurron'. Other local dishes include:- Papas arrugadas- small unpeeled potatoes steamed with lots of salt until the skin becomes wrinkled and served with a hot 'mojo' sauce. Fish dishes incude:- Sea bass Cazon con mojo Parrot fish or vieja Sea bream Tunafish Sword fish Shark Shopping: With the opening of the Las Rotondas shopping centre in Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura has become a shopper’s paradise. Apart from this shopping centre, Corralejo and Puerto del Rosario are the best places to shop. Just remember to carry your passport if you want to use your Credit Card! Activities: → Surfing : - Regarded as the premier surf destination in the Canaries, Fuertaventura is a haven for surfers with perfect breaks to suit all levels. → Water Sports : - Water sports such as waterskiing and windsurfing are available in all major resorts and easily accessible for all. Sea kayaking is also available or one can also take a leisurely glass bottom cruise around the shoreline. → Horse Riding : - Discover the beautiful natural surroundings of Fuerteventura on horseback. A gentle gallop in the surf, traversing the unique red volcanic interior or passing through charming villages, this is a relaxing, undemanding way to spend a day. → Quad Biking : - Speed your way through the countryside taking in the immense beauty of the island as you venture through sand dunes, volcanic craters and lush green valleys. This is the most exciting and rewarding way to see the real Fuertaventura and conclude your journey with a refreshing dip in a lagoon. Local Transport: √ Bus There are some sixteen different bus routes on the island. The buses run to time and are an excellent way to get around the island. √ Taxis Taxis are quite cheap on the island.
