Kanyakumari Beach got its name from a mythological story that is about a Hindu deity Kanya, who is supposed to be an incarnation of the Goddess Parvati. Kanya put in a lot of efforts to win Lord Shiva's heart and wanted to get married to him but was unsuccessful and so she vowed that she would remain a virgin all her life.

There is a Kumari Amman Temple that is dedicated to Goddess Kumari and it witnesses a large number of devotees from all over the world who come here to seek the blessings of the Goddess.
