Hostory of Meghalaya: The history of Meghalaya belongs to different legends, findings and beliefs related with Garos, Khasis and Jaintias. As history tells that Khasis were the first immigrants who evolved their way from northern Myanmar to their place Khasi and established a new center over there. Khasis speak Mon-khmer speeches which are spoken in South-East part of Asia.
The Garo, Jaintia and Khasi, each of them had their own kingdoms but in 19th century three of them came under the rule of British management. Finally, in the year 1835 British rulers integrated the state of Meghalaya into Assam. In 1947 Meghalaya became autonomous state within the Assam. But the people of this land were not ready to accept this and started a constitutional and peaceful movement for independence. The Assam introduced Assamese as the language of state which was unknown language for tribes of Meghalaya that brought a turning point in the freedom struggle of Meghalaya. In 1972 Meghalaya became full-fledged state of the Republic of India.
