The museum was built to house every artifact found on the rock and on its feet, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece. It also lies on the archaeological site of Makrygianni and the ruins of a part of Roman and early Byzantine Athens. Your evening begins with a short panoramic drive through the City Center and at the slope of the sacred hill you will be able to see, admire and photo the illuminated Acropolis. Then a pleasant walk through the narrow picturesque streets of Plaka, the old city, will bring you at a Typical Greek Tavern where you will enjoy your dinner following a floor show with live music and Greek Folk Dances in traditional costumes.
Day 3 : Delphi
Breakfast at the hotel and depart for the half day Athens City Tour. Leave Athens early in the morning for Delphi via the National Highway passing through the spectacular sites of Boeotia, Thebes and Levadia. Delphi is by common consent the most spectacularly beautiful ancient site in Greece and the one, which, even to the uninitiated, most vividly evokes the Classical past. In the antiquity Delphi was regarded as the navel of the world (Omphalos of the earth) and to this, and its oracle, the place owed its prestige, which extended far beyond the Greek world. A visit to Delphi is divided into three parts: the Sanctuary of Apollo which roofed the monument of the navel of the world and the oracle, the Stadium, dated in the Roman times lying on an altitude of approx. 3,000 ft., the Castalian spring and the Sanctuary of Athena at Marmaria; and the Museum. The Museum rebuilt in 1959-61 and splendidly arranged, is especially rich in Archaic sculpture from the site; the free-standing work may be compared with that in the Acropolis museum, while the relief sculpture ranks with the Aegina marbles in Munich. It includes spectacular finds, including the world-famous Charioteer, bronze statue of the early 5th century BC, the Naxian Sphinx, and the Statue of Antinoos. Lunch takes place in a local restaurant. Before returning to Athens, there will be a stop at the picturesque mountain village of Arachova. Arachova is only 9km (6 miles) from Delphi and is built on the south slopes of Parnassos. The village is famous for its attractive hand-woven carpets and rugs as well as for its wine and cheese. It is also famous for its narrow streets, the stone houses and tsipouro (aquavit), a very delicious yet strong tasting spirit. In the early evening return to Athens.
