The great Hindu reformer Adi Shankaracharya initiated the Char Dham Yarta in the 8th century in a bid to revive the Hindu religion. The term ‘Char Dham’ refers to the four abodes of God at Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. All these dham sites are situated in the Himalayan region of Garhwal, Uttrakhand. Badrinath is the most important among all the four sites because it is here that Adi Shankaracharya had attained freedom from incarnation.

Hindus consider these places to be highly sacred and so try to take a Char Dham pilgrimage tour at least once in their lifetime. Many also believe that visiting these Four Pilgrimage sites will wash away their sins. So even today, thousands of Hindu pilgrims visit these Dham sites during the annual pilgrim season that begins from the month of April and continues till the month of October/November when Diwali is celebrated in India. Chardham Yatra 2011 is scheduled to begin from May 2011”
