Many Indian cities are renowned for their temples, but only Varanasi has its celebrated ghats. These stone steps line the west bank of the Ganga in a 4.2 mile curve. At any time of day, but particularly in the pre-dawn hours, thousands of pilgrims line the water’s edge, bathing, worshipping and meditating. Brahmin priests preside over rites and rituals. At the two cremation ghats, Manikarnika and Haris hchandra, funeral pyres burn day and night. Varanasi is world renowned for its beautiful silk.
Wake up early for a boat ride on the Ganges River to view the bathing Ghats and cremation sites. Observe people worshipping at the Ghats.
