Arrive Kathmandu Airport, our airport representative will meet and greet you and escort you to your hotel. After checking in and refreshing you will be briefed on your trip ahead.
After an early breakfast, darshan & puja at the Pashupatinath Temple. Lunch at hotel, after lunch drive to Kodari on the Arniko highway following the Kosi and later Bhote Kosi River. From Kathmandu the road climbs steadily uphill out of the Kathmandu valley past, breathtaking views through a luxuriant, deep gorge shifting to a windy barren pass. We arrive at Kodari. Dinner & overnight.
As the name indicates, 'Pashupatinath Temple' is a temple of Lord Shiva and is the holiest place for Hindus. The sacred temple lies on the banks of sacred Bagmati River 5 kms east of Kathmandu city. Non-Hindus are strictly prohibited from entering the temple. It has two-tiered roof and four silver doors. Devotees from all over the world come here to pay their homage to lord Shiva.
After breakfast, walk across the famous Nepal - China Friendship Bridge spanning the Bhote Kosi River and proceed in line to China immigration & Customs. Once formalities are over we board our waiting vehicles and drive to Zhangmu. At Zhangmu we have an hour to explore this border town whilst our Tibet guide registers the necessary paper work with the PSB.
We then continue to Nyalam on steep switch back mountain roads. On arrival transfer to our Guest house and rest.
We take it easy today due altitude. You can take some short walks and spend the rest of the day just relaxing.
The road follows south of the Peigutso (Pigu tso), continues across the plain with stunning Himalayan views including Shishapangma, Tibet’s highest mountain and weather permitting Ganesh Himal. The route then follows a narrow gorge before climbing to a pass and dropping steeply down to a bridge crossing over the Yarlung Tsangpo River (Brahmaputra).
From Saga to Lake Manasarovar is a long drive of 7 hrs or more. There will be several river crossings & we drive past Mayum La (pass), 4600 m. The scenery is stunningly beautiful with panoramic views of the Himalayas and moon like desert plateau. Tibetan wildlife flourishes and some will be seen from giant rodents to Kiang (wild ass), not to mention the indomitable Yak and the special black necked crane and Tibetan deer.
About 30 kms north of Lake Manasarovar is Darchen, the main gateway to Mt. Kailash. The name Darchen originates from the word ‘Da Qing - Flag pole’. Here we organize yaks, ponies and porters for the Kailash circuit trek. This is also the route for Asthapath & Nandi.
After breakfast we drive a short distance to Tarboche where annually the flag pole that determines Tibet's future is predicted during the Saga Dawa festival. This Kailas circuit covers 53 kms & can be done in 3 days. We head north up the Lha Chu Valley and enter the 'Valley of the Gods' through the 'two legged chorten' known as Chorten Kangnyi. For Hindu's this is also known as Yamdwar. It is a gentle walk on a well defined path that remains on the right bank of the river. The towering cliffs each have a name and are believed to be the abode of supernatural protectors. There are many nomads herding yak and sheep to grazing areas west of the mountain. We cross the Lha Chu to camp below Diraphuk gompa at 5010 m. The views of Kailash north face are particularly impressive from above the gompa.
Today we cross the Dolma La (pass) 5630 m. The day begins with a steep climb on a winding path over a moraine ridge to a level meadow area. Our route climbs to the Shiwas Tal (cemetery) where Tibetans leave part of their clothing or a drop of blood to symbolize leaving part of their past life behind them. It is a slow steady climb to the Dolma La which is marked by streamers of prayer flags and the huge Dolma Stone that represents the goddess Dolma. The trail descends by a series of rocky switchbacks above the frozen waters of the holy lake of Gauri Kunda, 5608 m to reach the valley of the Zhong Chu. We follow the river to camp in the vicinity of Zutrul Puk gompa at 4820 m after 6 to 8 hrs of walking. It's a truly memorable day.
The final end of the Parikarma is an easy 2-3 hrs walk down to where the river emerges on to the Barga plain. We complete the 3 day circuit trek of Mt. Kailas & drive 57 km to Hor Qu situated on the northern tip of Lake Manasarovar.
We rejoin the main Lhasa to Kathmandu highway where we get to see Everest as the road climbs to the Lalung La, 5124 m before descending and climbing again to the Tong La at 5120 m. We finally reach Nyalam and overnight at a basic hotel.
Drive via Zhangmu & cross the Friendship Bridge to Kodari border where you will be met by our representative. We then drive to our hotel in Kathmandu.
Our Nepalese support team will take you to the airport for your flight home.
