Day 1 : Arrival & Transfer to Thimphu (1.5 hour drive from Paro airport)
As your Druk Air flight weaves through the valley, arrival in Bhutan is like no other. As you touch down, keep your camera at the ready, as we have noticed how passengers slowly disembark and then stand on the tarmac totally bewildered. Then move through to immigration where you will present your Visa Approval letter and Passport for the official stamp. As you clear the Immigration check, please make your way to the baggage delivery area and here you will meet your Guide for the first time who will welcome you with Khaddar (the traditional way of welcoming).
The transfer to Thimphu is approximately 1 ½ hours and along the way your sightseeing includes visit to Tschogang Lhakhang, “the temple of the excellent horse”. It is a private temple, built in 15th century, as the result of visitation from Balaha, the excellent horse, a manifestation of Chenrezig, the compassionate Buddha. The road passes along a narrow valley with high, rocky cliffs on the left, and then the valley opens out into farmland on the approach to Thimphu and upon arrival and after settle/check-in at the hotel for some refresh and relaxation.
In the evening, drive to Kuensel Phodrang, (Buddha Point) is a place from where one can get a complete view of the town of Thimphu. The point has the largest statue of the Buddha. Drive back to town and you can pay a visit to the National Memorial Chorten. (Overnight in Thimphu)
Day 2 : Tour of Thimphu
This morning you will pay a visit to Changangkha Lhakhang, built in 12th Century which is oldest temple in Thimphu. It is hovering over a ridge above Thimphu. Lama Phajo Drukgom Zhingpo who came to Bhutan from Ralung in Tiber chose this site to build this lhakhang. The Lhakhang houses Chenrizig: an 11-headed, thousand-armed manifestation of Avolokitesawara as the central statue. After the visit to the lhakhang you will head to north of Thimphu to visit the Zilukha nunnery housed by almost 200 nuns.
Drive back to the town and along the way you will have a choice to of visiting Folk Heritage Museum and National Library. After lunch you should be able to visit National Textile Museum and later visit for a few of the capital’s cottage industries ranging from traditional paper making to hand rolled incense.
In the evening, you will head to the north end of the valley to view Trashi Chhoe Dzong, the seat of Bhutan’s government and Royal offices. Then, drive back to hotel for dinner and relaxation. (Overnight in Thimphu)
Day 3 : Transfer to Punakha Valley (3 hour drive from Thimphu)
An early departure for a dramatic drive over the high mountain passes of Dochu La awaits but before reaching Dochu la pass, you will pay a visit to Simtokha Dzong, built in 1629 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, who unified Bhutan, the dzong is the first of its kind built in Bhutan. Then drive up to Dochu-la pass (3,088m/ 10,130 ft) stopping briefly here to take in the view and admire the chorten, mani wall, and prayer flags which decorate the highest point on the road.
The journey continues over the 3,050m mountain pass where on a clear day, towering Himalayan peaks are clearly visible. On arrival, you will be driven to hotel for some relaxation and after meal you will be able to visit the impressive Punakha Dzong. This ancient fortress is the winter residence of the monastic order’s head and still serves as the administrative headquarters for the Punakha region. Rest day at leisure (Overnight at Punakha)
Day 4 : Transfer to Paro Valley (4 hour drive from Punakha)
We opt for an early departure for a dramatic drive over the high mountain pass of Dochu La and on to the Paro Valley. Sights on the way include a stop at Lobesa where a short walk ends at Chimi Lhakhang, the auspicious fertility monastery built in 1499. Journey continues with way back up the dramatic Wang Chu en route.
Upon arrival at Paro, the sightseeing at Paro starts with a visit to the National Museum. Here, an intriguing collection of artifacts provide a wonderful introduction to the rich culture and heritage of the Kingdom.
After having lunch at the hotel, you will visit the Kichu Lhakhang, the oldest temples to have been built in Bhutan and it is one of the 108 temples built by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century AD. The King is said to have built 108 temples in a day throughout the Himalayan regions of which Kichu Lhakhang in Paro is one of them. Later in the evening, you visit a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse to gain an insight into the lifestyle and culture of the local people. Rest day at your leisure (Overnight at Paro)
Day 5 : Tiger’s Nest hike
The day starts with a hike up to view one of Bhutan’s most revered monuments, the Taktshang Goemba, more commonly referred to as the “Tiger’s Nest”. The four-hour trek offers spectacular views of this sacred monastery perched on a cliff face 900m above the valley floor. After returning from the hike, you will choice to drive back to hotel and take rest or there is an opportunity for a quick stroll to the nearby ruins, a visit to some of the valley’s oldest and holiest religious monuments or a ramble down Paro’s main street. Day 6 : Depart Paro
A car will be ready to take you to Paro Airport. Transfer time is approximately 20 - 30 minutes (depending on the where hotel is located) and you are advised to arrive at the airport an hour before your international flight departure.
