A visit to the Gangaramaya Temple is a must while in Colombo. This Vihara Buddhist Temple displays a blend of modern architecture and cultural spirit of the country. What’s more fascinating is the mix of Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian, and Chinese structural design in this temple. The peace-emanating atmosphere and placidity of Lake Beira on the southern end collectively enhance the beauty of this shrine.
Inside the Temple
All the quintessential features of a Vihara are present here- the Cetiya (Pagoda) the Bodhi tree, the Seema Malaka (assembly hall for monks), the Vihara Mandiraya and the Relic Chamber. The complex also includes a museum, a library, educational halls and residential halls. A collection of sapphires, sandalwood, ivory carvings and porcelain in the museum is must to be explored.
Gangaramaya Temple is more than just a place for worship. The place also serves as a learning center and contributes to social welfare through its old-age home, orphanage and a vocational school. Visitors belonging to other religions are openly welcomed here.
When coming here, you must be dressed appropriately, with your legs and shoulders covered.
Photography is allowed but make sure you are not disrupting the temple proceedings. Also, do not pose for a picture with your back facing Buddha.
