Once the residence of Ashoka, Ujjain boasts a cultural heritage, generally in the form of temples. The city is located on the eastern banks of Kshipra River and is the administrative centre of Ujjain District of the Indian State of Madhya Pradesh. This region is an extension of the Deccan Traps and has been selected as one of the cities to be developed as a smart city under Smart Cities Mission. Also regarded as one of the ancient cities of the country, Ujjain is home to Ujjain Division Cricket Association that is affiliated to BCCI.
The spiritual charm of Ujjain is self-evident. Thus, the famous poet Kalidas defined it as 'The town fallen from Heaven to bring Heaven to Earth'. The best time to visit Ujjain is during winters and spring, i.e., from October till March. Holiday goers can visit diverse sacred places including Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, ISKCON Temple, Gopal Mandir, Sandipani Ashram, Kaliadeah Palace, Vedh Shala, Ram Ghat etc., to rejuvenate their mind and soul.
