Climate & Geography

The climate of most of Libya is dry and desert-like. However, a milder climate is prevalent in the northern parts of Libya. Spring and autumn are marked by the southern wind which blows and is hot and dry in nature. There are also dust storms and sandstorms.

Libya is the 17th largest nation of the world. Libya is situated between latitudes 19 degrees and 34 degrees N and longitudes 9 degrees and 26 degrees E. The terrain is mostly barren with the plain being mostly flat to undulating. Libya is mostly covered with plateaus and depressions. Sabkhat Ghuzayyil is the lowest point at -47 m and Bikku Bitti is the highest point at 2,267 m.

The best time to visit Libya is from October to April, when the temperatures are between 15 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees Celsius during the day and 5 degrees and 20 degrees Celsius during night. Due to the Sahara Desert, the temperatures are very high during the summers and very low during the winters.

Airports, Seaports and highways are the ways to enter into Libya. Most of the international flights arrive at and leave from Tripoli International Airport. The Seaports are located at Zuwara, Tripoli, Khoms, Misrata, Ra’s Lanuf, Brega, Benghazi, Derna, and Tobruk. The Cairo-Dakar Highway connects Libya to the rest of Africa. The different places of Libya are connected to each other by the roadways. The public transport system is cheap in its rates and comfortable bus services can be availed at low prices. The taxi is also a common means of travelling in Libya.


Tourist & Immigration Info

It is relatively easy to obtain visa for travel to Libya. The tourist will need to apply at the nearest “People’s Libyan Bureau”, which is the Libyan Embassy. The Visa is generally valid for 3 months from the date of issue and can be validly used in Libya for 1 month. The visa can be extended by applying at the nearest immigration office. An invitation is required to visit Libya and can be provided by a friend or relative, business associate or a travel agency.
