Day wise Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Arrival – Colombo

    Upon arrival at the Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport, you will be warmly received by our representative from Experior Travels and escorted to your vehicle for transfer to Colombo, the starting point of your fascinating bird watching tour.

    Colombo is the official political and trade capital of Sri Lanka. All the famous shopping arcades are in and around the city, which allows one to have a tantalizing experience in Colombo as it has something to offer every visitor. As a hub of many ethnicities with people from all creeds working together, Colombo is indeed cosmopolitan.

  • Day 2 : Colombo – Kitulgala

    Today you will travel to Kitulgala, a small town in the Wet Zone forest and one of the wettest places in the country. It is the famed location of the Academy Award winning film ‘Bridge on the River Kwai’. Kitulgala is also a base for white water rafting, its rivers being surrounded by thick rain forests which are inhabited by numerous bird species.

    Bird watchers will be delighted by the sight of the Serendib Scops Owl, Mountain Hawk Eagle, Crested Treeswift and Layards Parakeet amongst others.

    One may also get a glimpse of Fishing Cat, Rusty-spotted Cat or a Jungle cat. These wild cats walk along the streamline searching for fish and their hunting techniques are interesting to observe.

  • Day 4 : Kitulgala – Sinharaja

    Today you will be travel to Sinharaja classified by UNESCO as a low-land Rain Forest. Its significance lies in the fact that it is home to about 50% of Sri Lanka’s endemic species of mammals, butterflies, insects and rare amphibians.

    The Sinharaja wilderness is rich in bird life with an impressive 147 species recorded to date. It is also the only locality where 21 out of 25 bird species endemic to Sri Lanka may be viewed. Interestingly, a few endemic and other species thought to be confined to the hill-zone have also been sighted at Sinharaja.

    Species to look out for: White-eye, The Scaly Thrush, The Wood Pigeon, The Dusky Blue Flycatcher, Yellow-eared Bulbul.

    Mixed species of bird flocks are one of the most interesting experiences of the forest. Observation made on at least 100 such flocks at Sinharaja, reveal that over 40 such species of birds, including 12 endemic species participate in flocks. Bird flocks show a distribution pattern that corresponds closely with the stratified vegetation, and are usually

    accompanied by animals such as Giant Squirrel, the Jungle Squirrel, the Purple-faced Leaf Monkey and the Mouse-deer. Purple-faced Leaf Monkey, their territory calls echo for miles in the forest.

    The Mouse Deer is one of the unique creatures that attracts visitors to Sinharaja, in addition to the leopard and the occasional jackal.

  • Day 6 : Kitulgala – Udawalawa

    Travel to Udawalawe National Park which is famed for its herds of elephants which a visitor will not miss spotting. Udawalawe is also a good bird watching site. Endemics such as: Sri Lanka Spur fowl, Red-faced Malkoha, Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, Brown-capped Babbler, Sri Lanka Jungle fowl (the national bird) are among breeding resident birds. White Wagtail and Black-capped Kingfisher are rare migrants. A variety of water birds visit the reservoir, including Cormorants, the Spot–billed Pelican, Asian Openbill, Painted Stork, Black-headed Ibis and Eurasian Spoonbill.

    The open parkland attracts birds of prey such as White-bellied Sea Eagle, Crested Serpent-eagle, Grey-headed Fish Eagle, Booted Eagle, and Changeable Hawk-eagle. Land birds are found in abundance and include Indian Roller, Indian Peafowl, Malabar Pied Hornbill and Pied Cuckoo.

    The Sri Lankan sloth bear is seldom seen because of its rarity. Sri Lankan Sambar deer, Sri Lankan axis deer, Indian Muntjac, Sri Lankan spotted chevrotain, wild boar and water buffalo are among other mammal species. Golden jackal, Asian palm civet, toque macaque, tufted grey Langur and Indian Hare also inhabit the park. A study conducted in 1989 found that considerable numbers of Golden Palm Civets inhabit the forests of Udawalawe.

    Today you will be transferred to Tissamaharama, from where you can spend time at the Bundala National Park.

    Bundala National Park Bundala is an internationally important wintering ground for destination for the migrant birds during northern winter, especially the Greater Flamingos which migrate in large flocks. The Park which comprises of several habitat and wetland types is a UNESCO designated biosphere reserve.

    The Bundala National Park has been identified as an outstanding bird area in the South Indian and Sri Lankan wetlands. 324 species of vertebrates been recorded in the national park, which include:

    32 species of fish, 15 species of amphibians, 48 species of reptiles, 197 species of birds, 32 species of mammals whilst 52 species of butterflies are among the invertebrates.

    The wetland habitats in Bundala harbours about 100 species of water birds, half of them being migrant birds, 197 avifaunal species 58 are migratory species.

    Yala National Park Yala National Park is the most visited and second largest National Park in Sri Lanka, famous for its concentration of Sri Lankan leopard. The park has a variety of ecosystems including moist monsoon forests, dry monsoon forests, semi deciduous forests, thorn forests, grasslands, fresh water and marine wetlands, and sandy beaches.

    Yala is one 70 important bird habitats in Sri Lanka. The number of water birds inhabiting wetlands of Yala is 90 and half of them are migrants. Black-necked Stork and Lesser Adjutant are some of the rare species that may be spotted.

    The migrant Great White Pelican and resident Spot-billed Pelican have also been sighted along with rare species such as Purple Heron, Night herons, Egrets, Purple Swamphen, and Oriental Darter.

    Listing them all would require a compendium!

  • Day 13 : Nuwara Eliya – Kandy

    Travel to Kandy – a World Heritage city. Traditions and culture remain undisturbed by European influence in the colonial era. The Royal Palace, now known as the “The Temple of the Tooth Relic” (of Lord Buddha), situated right beside the Kandy lake gives a magical beauty to the city. Kandy is also home to one of the largest botanical gardens in South East Asia. The Gardens dates back to the 14th century and boasts over 4000 species of plants and many trees with significant histories. Visitors from the UK will be particularly interested in the Cannonball Tree planted by King George V. The tree is bent with its fruits, which resemble cannonballs hence the name.

  • Day 14 : Kandy – Negombo

    Travel to Negombo, the fourth largest city in the Island, also known as ” Little Rome” for its splendor and the numerous churches scattered around the city. Historically, it was one of the main trade ports as its natural lagoon offered safe shelter to trading vessels from Arabia in centuries gone by.

    In the evening proceed on a boat ride into the Muthurajawela Marsh –part of an integrated coastal wetland system of high biodiversity and ecological significance, which covers an area of 3,068 ha. The marsh is listed as one of 12 priority wetlands in Sri Lanka, and has been declared a Wetland Sanctuary and protected wetland of the world.

    The wetland makes a natural habitat for hundreds of varieties of endangered species as well as endemic species. Researchers have identified 190 species belonging to 65 families with one endemic species, three nationally threatened species and 11 alien invasive species. The Bio diversity report says 209 fauna varieties were identified in the sanctuary, with 17 endemic types and 26 nationally threatened varieties.
