The site is both a palace and fortress. Sufficient remains to provide the visitor with a stunning insight into the ingenuity and creativity of its builders, the upper palace on the top of the rock includes cisterns cut into the rock that still retain water. The moats and walls that surround the lower palace are still exquisitely beautiful. Later proceed to Medirigiriya. Which is situated in a beautiful surrounding has a history going in to the pre-Christian era. The brahmi characters found on the bricks and the some of the stone carvings is an indication of the long history of this site.

The first reference to this site are in the chronicles during the King Kanittha Tissa (0192-0194) of the Anuradhapura Era. Later many kings have contributed to this complex. There are remains of an advance hospital in the same area. This is built as two squares. The outer square has 33 stone pillars and the inner square has 20 pillars. There have been three entrances to the building. There are indications that the rooms have had doors. A well preserved medicine boat too can bee seen here. Dinner & an overnight stay at the hotel.

  • Day 11 : POLONNARUWA / TRINCOMALEE

After breakfast visit Polonnaruwa the second most ancient kingdom of Sri Lanka, Polonnaruwa was first declared the capital city by King Vijayabahu I, who defeated the Chola invaders in 1070 C.E. to reunite the country once more under a local leader. With Vijayabahus victory and he shifted the kingdom to a more strategic location – Polonnaruwa. The real hero of Polonnaruwa in the history books is actually his grandson, Parakramabahu I.

The city of Polonnaruwa was also called as Jananathamangalam during the short Chola reign. However, with the exception of his immediate successor Nissankamalla I all other monarchs of Polonnaruwa, were slightly weak-willed and rather prone to picking fights within their own court. They also went on to form more intimate matrimonial alliances with stronger South Indian Kingdoms, until these matrimonial links superseded the local royal lineage and gave rise to the Kalinga invasion by King Magha in 1214 and the eventual passing of power into the hands of a Pandyan King following the Arya Chakrawarthi invasion of Sri Lanka in 1284. The capital was then shifted to Dambadeniya. Today the ancient city of Polonnaruwa remains one of the best preserved archaeological relics in the country, standing testimony to the discipline and greatness of the Kingdoms first rulers. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.

Then leave to the East coast selected resort area Trincomalee or Passikuda. Visit Trincomalee about a 113 miles South of Jaffna. The city is built on a peninsula, which divides the inner and outer harbours. The city is home to the famous ancient Koneswaram Temple alluded to in its historic Tamil name ”Thirukonamalai” from which its anglicized name is derived. Among the sights of the place are the seven hot springs of Kanniyayi, on the road to Trincomalee. A high wall assembles all the seven springs in a rectangular enclosure. The water is mildly hot; the temperature varies but slightly in each. A shear rock outcrop called Swami Rock, several meters high above the sea is the tip of Fort Frederick thus named by the British. Swami Rock is Lovers Leap where a Dutch Officers daughter had leapt after a broken affair. The Trincomalee harbour is the fifth largest natural harbour in the world, it is overlooked by terraced highlands. The great European powers vied for mastery of the harbour. The Portuguese, Dutch, French and English each held it in turn and there have been many sea battles nearby.

In the evening relax, have dinner & stay overnight at the hotel.
