Day 1 : NJP Rly Station / IXB Airport – Kalimpong (77 kms in 2-3 hrs)
Your trip commences with arrival at the New Jalpaiguri railway station or Bagdogra airport, where our representative will welcome you and you will be escorted on a scenic drive to Gangtok. It is among the most visited destinations in India.
Embark on a road trip to reach at an elevation of approximately 4,700 feet where you will be surrounded by varieties of rhododendron, orchids and colourful flora and fauna.
Upon arrival at the capital city, check in at the hotel and relax. The rest of the day will be at your will to explore. You can visit the MG Marg which has an electric atmosphere and is buzzing with shopping arcades and food stalls. You can spend some time by consuming in the mystic views and shopping for Thankas- traditional religious paintings, hand-woven shawls and other items. You can also indulge into horse riding activities here.
Day 2 : Kalimpong Local Sightseeing – Gangtok (77 kms / 3 hrs)
Fourth day is set out to explore Kalimpong. After breakfast, leave the hotel and drive through scenic road to Deolo hill; listed among the important places of interest to visit in Kalimpong. Deolo hill is one of the two hills in between which the town Kalimpong is setup. Scale the highest point of the region, Deolo hill, up to 1704m above the sea level. From the top, relish the enchanting views of Teesta River, Relli valley and gorgeous surrounding.
Then you head to Hanuman mandir; a big statue of Lord Hanuman on a hill. It is a great place for Hanuman devotees. Afterwards, visit the popular school of the town, Dr. Graham’s homes (school). The school was opened with a motive to educate the children of tea workers and other poor kids. The Graham’s home is also a well-known shooting spot.
Later, proceed to some important tourist spots in Kalimpong including- Durbin Monastery which is placed on the Durbin Dara Hill. The star attraction of the monastery is two large cylinders around 10ft high, on two sides. On turning the cylinders by a crank, the lever is so arranged that a bell would prompt on every turn. You also get to see prayer wheels on outside walls of the monastery; Manghal Dham, which a shrine cum a prayer hall. Dedicated to Lord Krishna the temple was raised by Shri Krishna Pranami in the memory of Guru Sri 108 Mangaldasji. The temple houses the statues of Prannath, Raj Shyamji and Mangaldasji.
The divine Mangal Dham works on the principles to help the schools, orphanages and whosoever in need; and Pine view nurseries which presents you a breathtaking and largest collection of cactus in whole Asia. The variety would make you wonder about cactus as a possibility in North Eastern locations too, apart from desert areas.Overnight stay in the Darjeeling.
Day 3 : Excursion to Changu Lake & Baba Mandir
The second day of this tour commences with a healthy breakfast at the hotel in Gangtok, followed by some local sightseeing expedition.
First, head to the Tsomgo Lake that requires a 3-hour drive to reach. Set at a height of 12,400 feet, the beauty of this glacial lake will be forever imprinted in your mind. It is considered to be sacred and the lamas in the earlier times predicted the future with the changing colours of the lake. A dark hue forecasted danger to the city and vice versa. In summers, the blossom of flowers encloses the lake.
Then, head to the Baba Mandir. It is a shrine set at an altitude of 13,200 feet that is dedicated to Harbhajan Singh, a former Sentry of Punjab Regiment. It is said that he fell into a stream and drowned. He appeared in the dreams of his fellow mates and asked them to make a memorial on his name here. His soul is believed to be guarding the international boundary between India and China.
An optional tour to Nathula Pass can also be arranged at an extra cost. The pass is among the highest motorable roads reachable by travellers in the world and it connects India to China’s Tibet Autonomous Region.
Day 4 : Gangtok Local Sightseeing – Darjeeling (115 kms / 4 hrs)
A popular and probably the best day tour from Gangtok is a trip to Tsomgo Lake - a glacial lake about 35kms from Gantok and at an altitude of about 12,310 ft. The same day trip also covers the fabled Baba Mandir. You can additionally cover Nathula Pass which is further up and about 52kms from Gangtok and see the Indo Chinese border and the Chumbi valley through which the old Silk Route (i.e. the trade route between India and Tibbet) passes.
Tsomgo lake and Baba Mandir combination takes about 5-6 hours round trip (including the time it takes to see the places). With Nathula it becomes a full day trip.
Note that you should take a large vehicle like Scorpio, Jeep etc for these places due to the road condition and steep gradient. All these places (Tsomgo, Baba Mandir and Nathula) are restricted areas and only Indians are allowed to visit with necessary permits. You will need to carry valid Photo Id card (PAN cards not accepted) and two passport size photos each to get the permits.
If you are taking a taxi from the stand, you will need to get your own permit from Sikkim Tourism Office at MG Marg or through a travel agent. I won't suggest you hand over your ID cards to an unknown taxi driver to organize the permit. Otherwise go through a reputed tour operator or your hotel who will take care of the permits. It needs to be done at least one day in advance.
Day 5 : Darjeeling Sightseeing
This day specifically needs you to make a really early start, at 4 a.m. where you will drive 2590 feet above sea level to reach the Tiger Hill. The sweeping views of sunrise cannot be missed from this point where the sun’s rays quietly fills the dark sky with radiating brightness. Moreover, the panoramic views of the colossal Kanchenjunga mountain ranges and other snow clad peaks are worth every second of your time.
As you make your way back down, make a quick visit to the Ghoom Monastery and the Batasia Loop.
Built in 1850, the monastery is the biggest and the oldest Tibetan Buddhist establishment in Darjeeling. The Batasia Loop is a spiral track of the toy train that is constructed over a hilltop. The views from both these sightseeing spots are enchanting.
On arriving at the hotel, devour a healthy breakfast and head out for some more sightseeing.
Visit the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. It consists of a residential school for mountaineering students along with a museum that showcases an array of mountaineering artefacts.
Then, visit the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park. It is shut on Thursdays and is set at an elevation of 7,000 feet. It is the largest high altitude zoo in India.
Visit the Tenzing Rock next. It is a large natural rock that people used to practice rock-climbing.
Enjoy an outer view of the Chitrey Tea Garden before you make your way to the Japanese Temple and the Peace Pagoda. The Japanese temple showcases four avatars of Lord Buddha and the tranquillity of the place is soothing.
The main aim of the pagoda is to spread the idea of world peace and sanitize the soul and minds of the people.
Then, in the evening, go to Chowrasta and Mall Road for an evening stroll. The Chowrasta is a meeting square to shop and lounge. You can indulge in shopping and enjoy a calm stroll in the bylanes.
After visiting all the local sightseeing places in Darjeeling, return back to the hotel for a peaceful overnight stay.
Day 6 : Darjeeling – NJP Rly Station / IXB airport (98 kms / 3 hrs)
Post breakfast on this last day of your Sikkim holiday tour package, prepare for check out from the hotel in Darjeeling and drive to the railway station/ airport where you commence your onward journey back home.
