The Inca Trail Trek will provide you with an unforgettable time in Peru because it offers a great mixture of pre-Incan archeological sites, pre-Hispanic paths, and small villages from the colonial era. You will spend part of this trek on a section of the great Capac Ñan, the grand Inca trail system that was once 39,900 kilometres (24,800 miles) long and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. You will also visit the unique archaeological site of the Kuelap fortress and spend a few nights in local homes to gain perspective on what it is like to live in the high Andes of northern Peru. We start the trek with a great 15km day that begins in Chachapoyas, Peru. We will head towards the great Inca trail of Capac Ñan and when we arrive we will continue trekking on the path for a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience. As we trek on the Capac Ñan, we will make a brief stop to visit the archaeological site of Yápale before arriving in the small village of Levanto. When we arrive in Levanto, we will eat a tasty traditional dinner and spend the night in the community.
We will wake up early and eat a delicious breakfast in Levanto. After we finish enjoying our meals, we will say goodbye to our friends in the village and begin our 18 km trek at 7:30 AM. This is a truly beautiful day of trekking, and while we need to cover a lot of distance, we will stop to visit two archaeological sites along the way to break it up into more manageable segments. Both of the sites that we visit are from the pre-Incan era and contain a lot of interesting history. The first that we will visit is called Marco and the second is called Machupirca. After visiting the two sites, we will continue our trek to the small village of Tingo. When we arrive in Tingo, we wil have time to relax before eating an amazing traditional dinner and spending the night in a family home.
We will wake up early this morning and eat breakfast in the family home. After we eat breakfast and pack up our things, we will begin a 9 km horseback ride towards the unique archeological site of the Kuelap Fortress. We will stop and eat lunch in a local community along the way and then finish our horseback ride to the Kuelap fortress. When we arrive at the Kuelap fortress, our professional guide will show us around the most unique and interesting sites and teach us about the history of the Chachapoya culture. After our tour is over, we will return to Chachapoyas in a private van and conclude our trek.
DEPARTURE/RETURN LOCATION: The Amazon Expedition office in Chachapoyas, Peru.
DEPARTURE TIME: Early in the morning on your first day.
RETURN TIME: Late in the evening on your last day.
