This trip will take us from the southernmost part of Mongolia to the northern most part. You will experience the various landscapes as you travel from the Gobi through the steppe to the northern taiga forest. See what you will discover along the way.

Day wise Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Ulaanbaatar

    An introductory city tour through Ulaanbaatar, where we will visit sites such as Gandan-tegchilen monastery, National Museum of Mongolia where you will learn about the history of Mongolia.

  • Day 2 : Gobi

    Drive to Gobi. On the way we will see ZorgolKhairkhan Mountain and Bagagazriinchuluu is a pile of stone massifs located in the middle of the steppe.

  • Day 3 : South Gobi

    Drive to South Gobi. Visit Vulture’s gorge of Gobi GurvanSaikhan National park. Vulture’s gorge is a narrow canyon with thick ice almost all year round in its depths and plenty of wildlife. If we are lucky, we will see argali and ibex on the mountain tops.

  • Day 4 : Khongor Sand Dune

    In the morning we will drive to Khongor Sand dune. Khongor sand dune is the largest and most spectacular sand dune in Mongolia. (Optional tour: Ride a camel). We will visit a camel herdsman’s family. Discover their daily life and ride a camel through sand dunes. In evening sit out under the night sky and watch the stars, Overnight in a tent or nomadic family`s ger.

  • Day 5 : Khongor Sand Dune

    Trek through Khongor sand dune where we will enjoy amazing sunrise of the Mongolian Gobi. Then we will drive through the semi-desert landscape to Bayanzag. Bayanzag is a valley famous for its archeological finds, including the first dinosaur eggs.

  • Day 6 : Ongi Monastery

    Drive to Ongi Monastery. Ongi monastery was founded in 1660 and consisted of two temples on the north and south banks of the Ongi River. Although it was ruined during the communist period, it operates as a museum and still houses some monks. Continue to drive Khangai Mountain Range.

  • Day 7 : Orkhon River Valley

    Enjoy Orkhon river valley and Orkhon waterfall Orkhon waterfall, also called UlaanTsutgalan, which was formed by a combination of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes about 20,000 years ago. Visit nomadic family. Discover their daily life and enjoy the view of nomads with yaks, sheep, goat and horses.

  • Day 8 : Tuvkhun Monastery

    Drive to Tuvkhun monastery and spend the afternoon trekking the area. Tuvkhun monastery was established in 1634 by Undurgegeen Zanabazar, the leader of Buddhism. He lived, worked and meditated for over 30 years in this monastery. It was here where he created the Soyombo, which became the symbol of freedom and independence in Mongolia.

  • Day 9 : Terkhiintsagaan Lake

    Drive to Terkhiintsagaan Lake via Kharakorum ancient city. Visit Erdenezuu monastery which, built on top of the ruins of Kharkhorin city, was the first and biggest Buddhist temple built in Mongolia.

  • Day 10 : Khorgo Crater

    Visit Khorgo crater and TerkhiinTsagaan Lake. Eruption of Khorgo volcano is said to have created TerkhiinTsagaan Lake by cutting of the flow of the river in the area.

  • Day 11 : Terkhiinttsagaan Lake

    Drive from TerkhiinTtsagaan Lake to Murun. Murun is the capital of Khuvsgul province and one of the biggest soums in northern Mongolia. Arrive in Shine Idersoum.

  • Day 12 : Shine Ider

    Drive from Shine Ider to Khuvsgul Lake. This is the deepest lake in not only Mongolia, but Central Asia, and is the world’s 14th largest source of fresh water. The lake is sacred to local Mongolians, who refer to it as ‘mother’. It contains much wildlife in its depths and surrounding areas.

  • Day 13 : Khuvsgul Lake

    Trekking for about 4-5 hours around Khuvsgul Lake. We will visit Tsaatan people, who herd reindeers deep in the coniferous forest.

  • Day 14 : Khuvsgul Lake

    Drive back from Khuvsgul Lake. Arrive in Khutag-Undursoum. On our way we might have a chance to see a group of deer stones erected in the open steppe. Overnight in a tent.

  • Day 15 : Amarbayasgalant Monastery

    Drive from Khutag-Undur to Amarbayasgalant monastery. Built in 1727-1736, Amarbayasgalant is famous for its architectural complexity. It was built without any nails, and used only materials provided by the mountains.

  • Day 16 : Ulaanbaatar

    Arrive in Ulaanbaatar. Some shopping and free time.

  • Day 17 : Departure
