Bhuvaneshwar: Bhubaneswar, the capital of Orissa, is also popularly known as the "Temple City of India". Being the seat of Tribhubaneswar or 'Lord Lingaraj', Bhubaneswar is an important Hindu pilgrimage centre. Hundreds of temples in Kalinga architecture dot the landscape of the Old Town, which once possessed more than 2000 temples. Lingaraj Temple : The Lingaraj Temple, an ancient temple built dating back to 7th century, is a majestic monument of Oriyan architectural style and craftsmanship. The temple, a massive structure of 147 feet high, is enclosed by fortified walls and is surrounded by many ancient small shrines. It is believed that the construction of the temple took place a long period during the rule of three dynasties. This beautifully and elaborately carved lofty tower is a special attraction of the temple. The Unique feature and identity of the temple is the main deity, a Swayambhu Linga, a merge of Half Vishnu and Half Shiva. The temple encloses a Shivling placed in a pancha-ratha sanctum, a hall for offering and other two halls used for dancing and other activities related to the temple. The annual chariot festival conducted during the month of April is a major point of attraction. Dhaulagiri : Situated on the banks of the Daya river - Dhauli is the place where the gory Kalinga war was fought in 261 B.C. Lord Buddha used to preach here. His preaching's were so strong that King Ashoka renounced war and embraced Buddhism. The Peace Pagoda built by the Japanese Buddhist Sangha stands tall on a hill and overlooks the entire Dhauli plain. This peace pagoda houses various statues of Lord Buddha and visually depicts stories of the Kalinga War and King Ashoka’s conversion to Buddhism. Sakshigopal Temple : is a medieval temple dedicated to Lord Gopal located in the town of Sakshigopal on the Puri Bhubaneshwarhighway in Odisha. The temple is built in the Kalinga style of temple architecture. Puri Jagannath : One of the Chardhams every Hindu thrives to visit once in his lifetime along with Badri, Dwaraka & Rameshwar. The temple is famous for its annual Rath Yatra, The, or chariot festival, in which the three main temple deities ( Krishna, Balabadhra, Subhadra ) are hauled on huge and elaborately decorated temple cars. The deities of Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra and Sudarshan Chakra are made from sacred Neem logs known as Daru Bramha. Konark Sun Temple : The Sun Temple popularly known for its architectural wonder and regarded as the World Heritage Site was built in the 13th century and designed as a gigantic chariot of the Sun God, Surya, with twelve pairs of ornamented wheels pulled by seven horses. Some of the wheels are 3 meters wide. Only six of the seven horse still stand today. The temple fell into disuse after an envoy of Jahangir descreted the temple in the early 17th century. Around the base of the temple there are images of animals, foliage, warriors on horses and other interesting structures. On the walls and roof of the temple beautiful erotic figures are carved. Sun temple of Konark is a masterpiece of Orissa's medieval architecture. The Konark temple is widely known not only for its architectural greatness but also for the sophistication and abundance of sculptural work. Chilka Lake : is a largest salt water lake which comprises hundred of small islands in its waterbody. It is spread over the Puri, Khurda and Ganjam districts of Odisha state on the east coast of India, at the mouth of the Daya River, flowing into the Bay of Bengal, It is the largest coastal lagoon in India and the second largest lagoon in the World. It is the largest wintering ground for migratory birds on the Indian sub-continent. The lake is home to a number of threatened species of plants and animals. The lake is an ecosystem with large fishery resources. The lagoon hosts over 160 species of birds in the peak migratory season. Birds from as far as the Caspian Sea, Lake Baikal, Aral Sea and other remote parts of Russia, Kirghiz steppes of Mongolia, Central and southeast Asia, Ladakh and Himalayas come here. These birds travel great distances; probably much longer routes than the straight lines, possibly up to 12,000 km, to reach Chilika Lake. One can enjoy the boating, a glance of Dolphins ,migratory birds and sea food here. Dakshineshwar : is a town in the West Bengal state of Indian Territory. Dakshineshwar is synonymously known with Ramakrishna ParamaHamsa who is regarded as an incarnation of God . Thus Dakshineswar could be counted as an important place of origin of the great socio religious renaissance of India. Ramakrishna formed around him a gathering of spiritual aspirants that condensed into later Ramakrishna Mission. His greatest disciple Vivekananda would proclaim the superiority of vedic culture over others which eventually gave rise to Bengali nationalism that intensely affected India as a whole. Kali Temple : The temple was built by Rani Rashmoni, a philanthropist and a devotee of Kali in 1855. The temple is famous for its association with Ramakrishna, a mystic of 19th Century Bengal. The temple compound, apart from the nine-spired main temple, contains a large courtyard surrounding the temple, with rooms along the boundary walls. There are twelve shrines dedicated to Shiva—Kali's companion—along the riverfront, a temple to Radha-Krishna, a bathing ghat on the river, a shrine dedicated to Rani Rashmoni. Belur Math : is the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, founded by Swami Vivekananda, a chief disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. It is located on the west bank of Hooghly River, Belur, West Bengal, and is one of the significant institutions in Calcutta. This temple is the heart of the Ramakrishna Movement. The temple is notable for its architecture that is the mixture of Hindu, Christian and Islamic fusion as a symbol of unity of all religions.
