Kal Bhairav: A fierce image of Shiva, representing the destructive aspect of the divine Jagannath Temple, Big Bell, Big Drum: Echoes of medieval Nepalese rituals. Cultural Insight: You will also visit the small Ganesh Temple revered for good fortune, and stroll through the old courtyards buzzing with local activity. 11:00 AM – Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple) A short drive takes you to the iconic hilltop shrine of Swayambhunath, also known as the Monkey Temple. This 2,500-year-old Buddhist stupa offers panoramic views of Kathmandu Valley and spiritual calm. Highlights: All-Seeing Eyes of Buddha: Painted on all four sides of the stupa dome. Tibetan Monasteries and Prayer Wheels: Showcasing Buddhist traditions. Harati Devi Temple & Anandakuti Bihar: Sacred places for both Hindus and Buddhists. Fun Fact: The temple complex is home to hundreds of monkeys considered holy and believed to protect the site. 12:30 PM – Boudhanath Stupa After lunch near Swayambhunath or en route, continue to Boudhanath, one of the largest spherical stupas in the world. This holy site is the spiritual hub of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. Highlights: Giant Mandala Stupa: Surrounded by prayer flags and spinning wheels. Tibetan Monasteries and Artisan Shops: Perfect for cultural immersion and souvenir shopping. Ritual Circumambulation (Kora): Join locals and monks as they circle the stupa clockwise. Non-Hindus are not allowed inside the main temple but can observe it from across the river. Highlights: Main Temple Architecture: Featuring golden rooftops and intricate woodwork. Cremation Ghats: A powerful and moving sight, revealing Hindu last rites. Sadhus (Holy Men): Often seen meditating or offering blessings.
