Thumboormuzhi Dam & Butterfly Park

Located about 55 km away from Thrissur, Thumboormuzhi Dam and Butterfly Park situated near it are tucked in a mystic forest patch and is a treasure of Kerala. Thumboormuzhi Dam is constructed across the River Chalakudy and the Butterfly Park is built on the banks of the river. Built across the Chalakudy River, the Thumboormuzhi check dam provides water for irrigation purposes. From here, a portion of the water from the river splits into two canals (Edathukara canal and the Valathukara canal), which are the backbone of the irrigation for the villages located near to this place. In the summer days, almost the whole of the river water is directed towards the canals and the river bed is visible clearly.

Many large butterflies can also be seen in the park during monsoon seasons. Generally, some of the butterflies that can be seen in the garden include southern birdwing (Troides minos), lemon butterfly (Papilio demoleus), light blue tiger (Tirumala limniace), common rose (Pachliopta aristolochiae), dark blue tiger (Tirumala septentrionis), etc.
