Gandhi Ashram, Sevagram is a famous tourist spot in Nagpur, Maharashtra. This is the place where Gandhiji stayed from 1934 to 1940 and carried on with his several experiments. He lived there without telephone or electricity the same as the other villagers lived their lives. He made this Ashram with all the local things that he could find. If you visit this Ashram you can see the small kitchen where Bapu used to cook.

 

Adi Nivas was the first hut which was built inside the Ashram. People used to gather around the hut to offer prayers. There are two residences as well which belonged to Gandhiji and Kasturba. These two residences are named as Bapu Kuti and Ba Kuti.

History

 

Gandhiji described this village as the place where they could carry on their activities and search for the truth and to develop fearlessness. He believed that this place was suitable for him to carry on with the freedom struggle. Though this place was filled with snakes, he never gave the order to kill them.

 

Gandhi Ashram, Sevagram, is spread on a 400-acre land. Soon two different works were started here. One was to create a group of non-violent members and workers and the other was to search for the truth. These non-violent group helped to form and organise different moments to fight for the freedom of our country.

 

On May 25, 1914, the Satyagraha ashram was founded in Ahmedabad. On June 17, 1917, the ashram was shifted to the banks of Sabarmati river after Gandhi returned from South Africa with 25 other inmates. In 1934 he moved to Warda and founded this Ashram where he carried on his freedom struggle with his followers. He led a community with a belief that non-violence and search for the truth under his guidance will bring freedom in India.

 

Best Time To Visit Gandhi Ashram, Sevagram

 

Sevagram is the safe-keeper of all memories that belonged to Gandhi. This place is a true gem which falls under the tourism of Maharashtra. Although the monsoon season is a sign of relief for the people residing in these areas after all the hot and humidity they face in summers, it is not advised to visit Sevagram during monsoons. The reason is the heavy rainfall that this place experiences during this time of the year. The rain will ruin your trip.

 

Winter

During winters, Sevagram brims glee and life. Sevagram has the coldest temperature during this time. The temperature in the day is about 23-degree Celsius but at night it falls to 13-degree celsius. Therefore during this time, you can experience the best trip of your life.

 

How To Reach?

 

Sevagram is known as the 'village of Service'. This place lies 8 kilometres away from Warda. This place is situated in the state of Maharashtra and it is the most prominent destination which one should visit at least for once. This place is easily accessible using all modes of transportation including air, rail and road.

By Air

Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport is the closest airport to the village Sevagram. This place is well-connected with all the neighbouring cities like Mumbai and Pune. You can take a bus to reach the village from the airport.

By Rail

Warda railway station is the closest railway station to Sevagram. This station is based on the Howrah, Mumbai and Nagpur rail track. You can avail cabs and buses from famous cities like Nagpur, Pune, Hyderabad and Mumbai. After you get down to the station, you can choose the car or bus services and reach the village.

By Road
