The Marangu route, often called the Coca-Cola Trail or Tourist Trail, is one of the oldest, easiest, shortest and most popular routes on Mount Kilimanjaro, used by a large proportion of climbers. This 5 day Marangu route itinerary uses the established stops at Mandara Hut, Horombo Hut and Kibo Hut and follows the same climbing route up to Uhuru Peak and back down to the exit gate. The program includes airport pickup and drop off, accommodation in Moshi, all transfers to the mountain and back to your Moshi hotel, professional mountain guides, porters and cooks, meals on the mountain, purified drinking water, park entrance fees, certificates and applicable government taxes and levies.
Day 1 begins at Marangu Gate at 1860m. From the gate climbers trek through lower montane forest and ascend to Mandara Hut at 2700m where accommodation is at hut facilities. The day covers the initial ascent and establishes the first nights stop at Mandara Hut.
Day 2 continues the ascent from Mandara Hut at 2700m up to Horombo Hut at 3700m. The route climbs above the forest into moorland and alpine zones with changing vegetation and progressively higher altitude as you reach Horombo Hut, the main acclimatization location on the route.
Day 3 is an uphill trek from Horombo Hut at 3700m to Kibo Hut at 4700m. The day involves a steady ascent across alpine desert terrain as climbers move higher in altitude preparing for the summit push from Kibo Hut.
Day 4 is the summit day and descent. Climbers depart Kibo Hut at 4700m for the night climb toward Uhuru Peak at 5895m for sunrise summit, then descend back down to Horombo Hut at 3700m. This day includes the final summit push to Uhuru Peak and a long descent to return to lower altitude for recovery.
Day 5 is the descent from Horombo Hut at 3700m back down to Marangu Gate at 1860m. The route returns along the same Marangu trail down through vegetation zones to the exit gate where transfers to Moshi are provided.
