Manipal is a university town situated in Karnataka. The beautiful town takes its name from Mannu palla, which has been anglicised as Manipal. In Kannada and Tullu languages, the meaning of Mannu is mud and the meaning of Palla is lake. The town has been named after the 400 m lake, which flows in the middle of the town. Mangalore Airport (formerly Bajpe Airport), is located 50 km from Manipal. Udupi Railway station at Indrali situated 4 km (2.5 mi) away from Manipal is the town’s nearest railway station.
Since, it is a suburb situated within Udupi; it is the Udupi City Municipality that administers it. The town havens end numbers if educational institutions and this is the reason why lakhs of students flock to the town every year. Manipal is also the headquarters of Syndicate Bank and in 2006 it was having the highest density of mobile phone users.

Climate & Geography
It is situated on the rocky remote areas of the Malabar Coast of south west India. It is precisely located 5 km away from the temple city of Udupi and 65 km away from Mangalore. The months between June and August witness heavy monsoon in the town. In the months between March to May, the temperature rises to 35 °C (95 °F). The rest of the year the weather is tropical with aprox. temperature of 27 °C (81 °F).
