  Step back in time with an afternoon visit to the mysterious Gede Ruins, the remains of a once-thriving 13th-century Arab-Swahili city that was mysteriously abandoned in the 17th or 18th century. Nestled within lush coastal forest just outside Watamu, Gede is steeped in history, legend, and a touch of mystique—local tradition warns against entering after sunset.
  
  Excavations have uncovered treasures such as Ming porcelain, Persian glassware, and glazed terracotta, hinting at Gede’s rich trading past. The coral-stone ruins, framed by towering baobabs and dense vegetation, include mosques, palaces, and homes, all built with lime and earth-based coral stone.
  
  During your 90-minute guided walk, you’ll encounter playful monkeys, baboons calling from the treetops, colorful butterflies, and quick-footed lizards darting through the ruins, making the visit both culturally and naturally enriching.
