Mt Meru is one of Tanzania’s most beautiful volcanoes, and it is the second highest mountain in Tanzania at 4,5685m, the fifth highest in Africa.

The mountain is located within Arusha National Park, Tanzania’s gem.

There are two huts available to climbers on the mountain and firewood is supplied. The best time to climb Meru is between October and February. But also June to September, while it is colder then.

This trek serves as an ideal warm up for Mt. Kilimanjaro due to its altitude acclimatization and hiking distances.

After Mt Meru climbing it is great to continue your Africa dream with some short SAFARI

Which can be ended with relaxation in beautifull Zanzibar island.

Day wise Itinerary

Day 1 Arusha – Momella Gate – Mariakamba Hut

Mount Meru is located in Tanzania and is the fifth highest mountain in Africa. It is a great mountain to climb and offers spectacular scenery, including views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Drive 1 Hr, Hike Distance 10 km, 4 – 5 hrs, 1000m ascent, Alt: 2516

Dinner and overnight Mariakamba Hut

Day 2 Mariakamba Hut To Saddle Hut

Hike Distance 4km, 2 – 3 hrs, 1050m ascent, Alt: 3566

Dinner and overnight Saddle Hut.

The mountain is unspoilt and less congested as compared to it’s Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya counterparts.

Day 3 Summit To Saddle Hut To Momella Gate And Back To Arusha

Hike Distance 14km, 6 to 8hrs, 3050m descent, Alt: 1516

The Mt Meru ascent passes through many different vegetation zones. The dry forest of the lower region changes to a dense mountain rainforest, which then turns into scrubland.The way back during the ascent, you might come across large game such as giraffes, buffaloes, baboons, colobus monkeys and antelopes.

Drive 1 hr back to Arusha. Hotel in town
