Xigatse has one of the most impressive castles, a model for the Potala. The actual structure is a reconstruction, since the Tibetan under Chinese occupation dismantled the 17th Century fortress. Gyantse used to be the third city in Tibet. With 8000 inhabitants, this city at almost 4000 meters high hosts the Kumbum, the biggest chorten in Tibet, inside the Palcho Monastery. The Tibetan capital has changed a lot in the last decades, but the impressive Potala still seems over control. We will devote the day to visit the Dalai Lama Palace, UNESCO World Heritage. Sera and Drepung where monasteries and important centres of knowledge for the Tibetan culture and still keep its prestige, although the recent changes in Tibet also brought the Western universities to the city.
