After breakfast, continue east on the Shira Plateau for 2-3 hours before reaching the junction for Shira and Lemosho Route. Continue on through the barren landscape for another 30 minutes before stopping for lunch. A hot lunch will be served at the Lava Tower, a 300-foot unique lava formation on the top ridge of the Bastian Valley. In the afternoon you can opt for an additional acclimatization walk up the Western Bridge to the Arrow Glacier Camp, which is located at 4,800m. Barafu Camp (4,600m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Hike time: 12 hours; elevation change: +1295m -2795; final elevation: 3100m.
Around midnight, begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. For the next 6 hours, hike by the light of your headlamp. The final ascent to the crater rim is the most challenging part of the entire eight-day trek. The going is steep and slow until you reach the crater rim at Stella Point. The hike from Stella Point to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and, as far as hikes go, not very difficult. The altitude, however, makes the hike long and difficult. The crater rim hike takes approximately 45 minutes. Upon reaching Uhuru, take photos with your guide and group at the peak before beginning the descent to Mweka Camp. On the way down from Uhuru, enjoy breathtaking views of the mountain, crater, clouds and glaciers. At Barafu Camp, eat a special-prepared brunch, and take a short break. You still have another 3 hours to go before reaching Mweka Camp.
