Bundi just 36 km from Kota is a tiny picturesque town. One of the unexplored cities with a rich historical wealth. Once a part of Kota, it was ruled by the Hada Chauhans a offshoots of the famous Chauhan clan who ruled Delhi and Ajmer. In 1193 AD when Prithvi Raj Chauhan was defeated by Sultan Mohammed Gauri, some Chauhan nobles seeked shelter in Mewar and became allied to the Rana while other young warriors moved towards the Chambal valley and overpowered the Meena and Bhil tribals - thus establishing their own kingdom of Hadoti. Later, two branches of Hadas formed two separate states of Kota and Bundi, on either side of the River Chambal. Bundi is surrounded by the Aravalli hills on the three sides and is circumscribed by a massive wall with four gateways. Interesting monuments including impressive medieval forts, palaces, havelis, temples with beautiful stone idols and chattris with carved pillars, along with a picturesque lake in the heart of the town, add to its charm. Bundi is very famous for its intricate carvings and murals.

  • Day 3 : Bundi

    Breakfast in the Hotel

Later we have full day sightseeing of Bundi, including Bundi Palace

The serpentine Taragarh Fort and its palace is what immediately strike visitors on arrival in Bundi. Rudyard Kipling who visited here a century ago wrote, "No human hand can create such a splendour; for only angels have that skill". Taragarh is Bundi's pride. This imposing fort was raised at a height of 500 meters atop a hill by Rao Bar Singh in the 13th century. Strong bastions the biggest being Bhim Burj, rise above the chain of palaces built by different rulers over a period of time. A huge reservoir within the fort provided the place white water. A curious feature about it is that whenever the water lever rises above the danger level, sluice gates are opened and the running water makes the lanes of the city turn into miniature canals. Striking features of the fort are the Chhatra Mahal, Badal Mahal and Ratan Daulat - Diwan-I-Aam, built by Rao Raja Ratan Singh (1607-31). The Chhatra Mahal was founded by Raja Chhatrasal in 1660 the famous Bundi Kalam miniatures can be found here. The Zenana Mahal and the Badal Mahal also have an excellent collection of miniatures. The famous Chitrashala, built by Rao Raja Umed Singh (1739-70) has open galleries running around it and have the best of Bundi wall painting depicting the Raas Leela, court life and beautiful women. To view the other frescoe-covered palaces, permission is required form the royal family as the fort is private property. The Chhatra Mahal, Phool Mahal and Badal Mahal and Bundi miniatures have been recognized, world wide, for their superb quality.

The Taragarh Fort or 'Star Fort' is the most impressive of the city's structures. The white fort that stands on a wooded hill is one of most striking forts of Rajasthan. Taragarh fort was built in 1354 AD upon a steep hillside and is great palace to ramble around at leisure. Set within the horse-shoe shaped fold of the hills, and with the lakes and water reservoirs below, the fort straddles the crest and offers invincible battlements that must have proved difficult to scale. Taragarh is reached by a steep road leading up the hillside to its enormous gateway. The views over the town and surrounding countryside from the top are magical, especially at sunset. The largest of its battlements is the 16th century bastion known as the Bhim Burj, on which was once mounted a particularly large cannon called Garbh Gunjam, or 'Thunder from the Womb'. The fort has three tanks which never dry up. These tanks are right on top of the fort which sits on top of one of the hills surrounding the city. The huge reservoirs within the fort were carved out of solid rock. The technique is long since lost but the tanks survive as a testament to the advanced methods of construction and engineering in medieval India

Rani Ji Ki Baori : While baoris in Rajasthan display a dexterity and architectural beauty typical of the state, non them compare with Rani ka Vav (queen's stepwell) at Patan, Gujarat, except the Rani ki Baori at Bundi. Though not as large in its dimensions, it is extremely ornate and embellished with excellent of carving of elephants with their trunks turned inwards, as if they had taken water of the baori and were quenching their thirst. As you descend towards the water source, large well preserved statures of Ganesh, Saraswati and the ten incarnations like Matsya, Varaha and Narsingh attract your attention thou some of them have become victims of the elements over time. The well has depth of 46 metres and a very ornate & exquisitely carved Toran Dwar. The length and breadth of the baori is 40'*30'. The delicately chiseled arches on the columns add to the beauty and grandeur of the total structure which is an example of the Rajasthani baori architecture at its best. This baori was built in 1600 AD by Rani Natawati, wife of Rao Raja Anirudh Singh. She is reported to have commissioned nearly 21 baoris.

Sukh Mahal : A magnificent summer palace on the Jait Sagar Lake amid the luch surroundings of a beautiful garden. An underground tunnel is believed to run from the Sukh Mahal to the old Palace.

Dabhai Kund of Bundi : The Dabhai Kund also known as the jail kund, is the largest of the kunds in Bundi. Though slightly overgrown, it is well worth a visit for the spectacular carvings on the numerous steps leading down to the water level Shikhar Burj: Located in the sun-dappled forest, Shikhar Burj was the royal hunting lodge. Wild-life in the Bundi woods comprised tigers, deer and boar. The royal hunts of Bundi were well renowned.

    Morning breakfast in the Hotel

Later we have excursion to visit the Badoli temples (49Kms). Badoli is a village, and the only real things to see here are ancient famous temples that were built between the 9th and 12th centuries. What is remarkable about these temples is that they were left untouched by the Afghan invaders and still stand in marvellous dignity. Situated in a clearing within a forest, the Baroli temples consist of a number of temples in close proximity, the Ghateshwara temple being the principal amidst them. However, the Baroli temples are not very large ones, and if you are used to seeing massive ones like the temples in Khajuraho, a little disappointment may seep in. These temples were not designed for hordes of worshippers, and their size makes it apparent that their use was restricted mainly to holy men and local believers, with the royalty dropping by once in a while. Built from stone, all temples here have detailed carvings in pillars, ceilings and roofs.

Later we also drive to Keshorai temple.

Afternoon we return back to Hotel

  • Day 13 : Kota

    Morning breakfast in the Hotel

Later we drive to visit the Kethun Village (35Kms). Doria saris can be found only in Kota, but the people who originally weaved them were not from here. In fact, a certain Kota ruler discovered them during one of his military campaigns in the south. Sometime in the 17th century the Rao was in Mysore with his army fighting wars and trying to increase his kingdom when he bumped into weavers of the doria cloth. This cotton and silk fabric intricately woven with colourful floral motifs caught his fancy, and he brought its makers to Kota. Interestingly, doria weaving has now died in Mysore and flourishes only in Kota. The finished fabric is also known as Kota Masuria (from the word Mysore) as a tribute to its original ancestry. Kota is also celebrated for its painted ceramics and black painted pottery, filigree work (thin strands of silver or gold wound around ornaments), calico (heavy cotton cloth) printing and lacer work on toys and inexpensive ornaments.
Later we also we have the BOAT SAFARI In CHAMBAL RIVER. When you come to kota you can’t escape the river. The Chambal flows through the city and it does not look like a river in the middle of a even a few minutes on a boatand you’re beginning to see kingfishers diving and birds nesting on the rocky banks of the river.
