One such initiative taken by the Maharajas of Mysore is Bandipur National Park. Although earlier known as Venugopala Wildlife Park, it attained the status of a national park and tiger reserve in the year 1973.

    Spread across an area of 874 square kilometers in the southern state of Karnataka, Bandipur is a home to several endangered species like tigers, Indian elephants, gaurs, sloth bears and many more. The dry deciduous forest that covers the majority of this region provides shade to all the travelers. One can spot a variety of trees like rosewood, teak, Indian-laurel, giant clumping bamboo, Indian kino tree and sandalwood etc. Indian gooseberry, kadam tree, golden shower tree, axlewood, black myrobalan and indigoberry etc., are some of the fruit and flowering trees found in Bandipur.
