Gangrel Dam

Gangrel Dam needs no introduction. It is a well-known landmark located in Chhattisgarh. Built on the River Mahanadi, this dam is the longest dam in the state. This earthen-dam has a humongous height of 100 feet and a length of 6004 feet. Due to such structure, it has a capacity to hold back 910, 500,000 million cubic of waters. It is visited on a huge scale by the tourists for spending a good quality time.

Why Is It Famous?
Formerly, Gangrel Dam was known by the name of R.S Sagar Dam and was opened in the year 1979. Its construction has brought a great relief to the rural dwellers, especially the ones that practice agriculture for a livelihood. It creates the reservoir of Ravishankar that serves as a major source of water to irrigate the fields. The canal system was also introduced for the supply of water.

The construction of Gangrel Dam has also resolved the problem of the shortage of electricity. It produces 10 megawatts of hydro-electricity that is utilized for the different purposes.

Its surroundings have been developed by the combined efforts of the zonal & state authorities. It has resulted in the increase of tourism in Dhamtari. Due to the beautiful surroundings, it has emerged as a huge crowd puller.
