Nkaroni Hill Overview, Masai Mara

Nkaroni Hill is one of the many scenic hills in the Masai Mara, an iconic region of Kenya that is home to some of the most abundant wildlife in Africa. Located in the heart of the Mara, this hill offers breathtaking views of the surrounding savannah, making it a popular spot for both wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. Whether you're planning a safari or just a peaceful getaway in nature, Nkaroni Hill is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the Masai Mara.

How to Reach Nkaroni Hill, Masai Mara

Reaching Nkaroni Hill requires some effort, as it is located deep within the Masai Mara Game Reserve. Visitors can either drive or fly to this beautiful destination, but it’s important to understand that accessibility can be affected by the time of year due to the terrain and weather conditions.

From Nairobi

The most common way to get to Nkaroni Hill is by starting your journey in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. You can:

  • Drive: The drive from Nairobi to the Masai Mara takes about 5-7 hours, depending on the route and road conditions. It’s approximately a 270 km drive from Nairobi to the Mara. The last part of the road is usually unpaved, and it’s best to travel by a 4x4 vehicle, especially during the rainy season.
  • Fly: Alternatively, you can book a flight from Nairobi's Wilson Airport to one of the airstrips near the Masai Mara, such as the Mara North Airstrip or Keekorok Airstrip. From the airstrip, you will be transferred by a vehicle to the vicinity of Nkaroni Hill. Flight times are usually around 45 minutes to an hour.

From Muscat

If you're traveling from Muscat, Oman, your journey will start with a flight to Nairobi. From there, follow the same routes outlined above, either driving or flying into the Masai Mara and accessing Nkaroni Hill.

Weather and Timing

The weather around Nkaroni Hill and the Masai Mara is typically warm with two distinct seasons – dry and wet.

  • Dry Season (June to October): This is the best time to visit the Masai Mara. The weather is warm and dry, with clear skies, making it ideal for wildlife safaris. Temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F), and the animals tend to gather near water sources, making sightings more frequent.
  • Wet Season (November to May): The wet season can bring intermittent rains, especially from March to May. The landscape becomes lush and green, and wildlife is still abundant, but some roads can become muddy and difficult to navigate. Temperatures range from 18°C to 28°C (64°F to 82°F).

The best times to visit Nkaroni Hill are during the dry months when access is easier and the landscape is open for sightseeing and wildlife viewing. Morning and late afternoon hours offer the best wildlife experiences, especially for capturing stunning photographs of the savannah and its animals.

I had an amazing experience on this private safari across Kenya and Tanzania. The itinerary was perfectly balanced, covering famous parks like Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, and Ngorongoro. Every destination had its own unique beauty, and the landscapes kept changing in the most stunning ways. The safari drives were the highlight—we got so close to animals while still feeling completely safe. The guide and staff were very friendly and professional, always making sure we were comfortable throughout the trip. Everything from transport to accommodation was smooth and well planned. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a premium African safari experience. ...more

What a wonderful tour! We wanted the private tour to take its own time, and this 12-day safari provided just that. I've seen great wildlife in both Kenya and Tanzania. In Masai Mara lions, leopards, elephants - all have been seen from close. Seeing flocks of flamingos and rhinos on the banks of Lake Nakuru was a very special experience. On a clear day in Amboseli, Mt. Seeing Kilimanjaro is a truly memorable moment. At the end, the Ngorongoro Crater amazes us - the animals around, the beautiful scenery, and the tranquil atmosphere. The entire trip was well-planned and comfortable. Seven Wonders Safaris is a great choice for a private safari. ...more

This 3-day luxury camping trip with Dallago Tours was absolutely amazing. On the first day of the game drive, I was surprised to see elephants, lions and hyenas. In the interpretation of the guide Joseph learned a lot about the way of life of each animal. The camp was comfortable, with large beds, hot water and just the sounds of nature around - it was a different experience to sleep at night listening to the crickets. Watching the sunrise on the hot air balloon ride in the morning of the second day - magical in a word! It was a once in a lifetime moment to see the animals running in the sun in the sun from above. In the afternoon, I went to the Maasai village and enjoyed their culture, music and dance. Every day was full of fun and excitement. This safari will be one of the best experiences of my life thanks to the professionalism and caring service of Dallago Tours. ...more

This trip connected me to nature in a way I never had before. My goal from the beginning was to see the big five. Seven Wonders Safaris made that possible. I saw countless lions, elephants, and buffalo in the Masai Mara and Serengeti. Lake Nakuru was a peaceful place, and the flamingos there were a treat to my eyes. When I suddenly saw a black rhino in the Ngorongoro Crater, it felt like I was dreaming. ...more

The accommodations chosen and booked by Vincent were clean, comfortable and provided delicious food and excellent views. The game drives were magical and will be cherished memories forever. And finally the 2 day Diani beach stay was a perfect releasing end. Couldn’t recommend enough! ...more

The 4-day Masai Mara safari was a dream come true. Starting from Nairobi, we reach the Maasai Mara National Reserve via Narok, and from there, the story of a different world begins. The first game drive - I saw lions, elephants, and countless wildebeest. The guides were experienced, and Bencia Africa Adventure & Safaris arranged the entire trip so nicely that all we had to do was enjoy ourselves. The lying lion, the peeping cheetah, and the sunset amid the far-flung savannah - all this was a unique experience of life. If one wants to have a taste of wildlife safari, a trip to Masai Mara with Bencia is a must. ...more
