Antarctica cruise tours offer a unique way to explore the remote continent, often including visits to the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula. These cruises typically depart from Ushuaia, Argentina, and involve a two-day crossing of the Drake Passage. The Antarctic polar region surrounds the South Pole and encompasses the continent of Antarctica and the surrounding Southern Ocean. The polar region is located in the southern hemisphere, opposite the Arctic region at the North Pole. In Antarctica, the long period of darkness typically lasts for about six months during the polar winter. This darkness occurs because the Earth's tilt causes the sun to remain below the horizon for extended periods at the poles during their respective winters. For the South Pole, this darkness period stretches from around late March to late September. During the polar winter, there are no sunrises or sunsets, only continuous darkness (roughly March to October), is characterized by extreme cold, darkness, and strong winds. Conversely, the Antarctic summer (October to March) brings 24 hours of daylight, with the sun never setting. The length of daylight and darkness varies depending on the location within Antarctica, with the duration increasing the closer one gets to the South Pole.

But the rewards for the journeyer that braves these waters do not compare. The meeting of warm and cold waters creates an environment that attracts extraordinary wildlife. Drake Passage offers the chance to witness the likes of humpback whales and hourglass dolphins that accompany the voyage. The soundtrack of the 48-hour journey through the Drake Passage includes the crash of the ocean against the ship and the cry of petrels, skuas, and gulls.
While the waterway is famous for its challenging navigation, you may still get another side of the Drake Passage. On some occasions, the channel is calm and tranquil, making for a pleasant voyage into Antarctica. That’s one of the more splendid characteristics of the Drake Passage - you never know what you will get.

CAPTAIN’S CHOICE — Your Captain will expertly navigate ice floes, icebergs and changing sea and weather conditions to ensure you experience the most from your expedition. Each day is a new adventure filled with a spontaneous sense of exploration as your Captain works with our expedition team to determine possible shore landings and Zodiac safaris. All itinerary routes serve as examples and are subject to change based on current conditions, prioritizing the safety and optimal expedition experience for all guests.
Note: The continent has very strict environmental laws to protect the wildlife which is why you really can't do anything but stand on the continent. 📍Portal Point, Antarctica is actually one of the only locations where you can touch the snow.
Visitors typically don't wear their own shoes directly on the continent. Boots are often disinfected before and after landing to prevent the introduction of foreign organisms.
