It is believed that Guru Rinpoche, disguised as a garuda, engaged the demon, who was in the form of a cobra, in a compassionate "dance of love and understanding," leading the demon to remorse. This legend is a central theme of the site's significance and is often celebrated during the annual festival.

He prophesied that a statue of Guru Nangsi Zilnön should be built in the Kurtoe valley to prevent a future "war of horses" and ensure peace and prosperity. The project was initiated and funded by the Druk Odiyana Project and conceptually designed by the Ven. Khenpo Karpo Rinpoche. Construction began in March 2008 and the statue was consecrated in 2015.
