Day wise Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Arrival at Paro (Altitude 7,478ft/2280m)

    The flight to Paro crosses the Himalayan Mountains, affording spectacular views of the awesome peaks, including the sacred Jomolhari and Jitchu Drake peaks in Bhutan. On arrival at Paro international airport, you will be received by Bhutan Travel Adventures representative and escorted you to hotel. After lunch, you'll visit the national museum (Ta-Dzong) one of the best museums of Asia. Once it was the watch tower of Paro valley from 1616 A.D to 1907 and it was converted into the National Museum in 1968. The museum stands on a promontory overlooking the Paro valley. Also visit the Paro Rinpung Dzong Rinpung (fortress of the “heap of jewels”), Today, the Dzong is the seat of the district administration as well as the home for the monastic school. The central tower (utse) of the Dzong, with its superb woodwork, is one of the most beautiful in the country. The Dzong was built in 1645 A.D. Here, you'll receive an intimation of the uniqueness of the Buddhism in these Kingdom. Stroll downhill from the Dzong over an old cantilever bridge is a suitable ending to your first day in Bhutan.

  • Day 2 : Excursion to Taktsang Monastery

    A very special day, with an excursion to view the spectacular Taktsang (Tiger's Nest) monastery - After breakfast a short drive till the motor road point, from there a 2 hour hike till the viewpoint point of the monastery. The trail climbs through beautiful pine forest, many of the trees festooned with Spanish moss, and an occasional grove of fluttering prayer flags. We stop for a rest and light refreshments at the Taktsang Jakhang (cafeteria) and then walk a short distance to Taktsang monastery. The primary Lhakhang was built around Guru Rimpoche meditation cave in the 1684by the Penlop of Paro Gyaltse Tenzin Rabgay, this incredible monastery clings to the edge of a sheer rock cliff that plunges 900 meters into the valley below. Legend has it that Guru Padmasambhava, the tantric mystic who brought Buddhism to Bhutan, flew here on the back of a flying tiger, Dorji Drolo, said to be his favorite consort.
    After lunch hike back till the road and drive to Drugyel Dzong (a ruined fortress - 16 Kms. away from Paro Town). Although in ruins, this Dzong is of great historical importance. It was here that the Bhutanese finally defeated the invading Tibetans and drove them back. On a clear day you can get a view of the Mt. Jomolhari (Alt 7329m). On the way back visit a typical Bhutanese farm house and take a leisurely stroll around the compound and the Paro town.

  • Day 3 : Paro to Thimphu

    Distance 55 Km. Driving 1.5 Hours.(Thimphu Altitude 7609ft/2320m)
    Drive one and half hours to the capital town Thimphu, in the morning. Enroute visit the Memorial Chorten, built in1974 in memory of the late King of Bhutan. After checking into your hotel, spend the afternoon with a choice of activities. Your guide and driver will be at your disposal.
    After lunch we would suggest, you go to Bhutan National Bank for currency exchange and then you can get an opportunity to purchase exquisite collector Bhutanese stamps. Then visit National Library where ancient texts and manuscripts are preserved; The Indigenous Hospital where traditional medicines are still practiced; Woodcraft and Painting school where traditional art and crafts are still kept alive; Handicrafts Emporium where Bhutanese textiles are displayed and can be purchased. In the evening explore the busy Thimphu town with your guide or on your own.

  • Day 4 : Thimphu day hike to Tango and Cheri monasteries

    We will drive 12km north of Thimphu to hike to Tango and Cheri monasteries. It will take about 45 minutes to hike to the monastery. Tango Monastery is a Buddhist college, and it's the residence of the Desi Tenzin Rabgye, a young boy who is the reincarnation of the 16th-century monk who built Tango. We will then hike to Cheri monastery, which is also about a 45-minute hike.
    After picnic lunch then drive back to Thimphu for city sightseeing, Takin Zoo, view point of Thimphu and traditional paper factory.

  • Day 5 : Thimphu - Punakha/Wangdue

    Distance: 95 Km. Driving:3 Hours.(Punakha Altitude 4200ft/1280m) Wangdue 1 hour drive alt.:4428ft/1350m.

    Drive early to Punakha, the ancient capital of Bhutan across Dochu-La Pass at 3050m from where snow-capped eastern Himalayan ranges can be seen on a clear day. Prayer flags will flutter you over the pass taking you deeper into the essence of Bhutan. Once you cross the pass, you wind down into a warm fertile valley and meander along a gently flowing aquamarine river that leads you to the Punakha valley. Then visit the Punakha Dzong, the winter residence of the Je khempo (chief abbot). Punakha Dzong is the second Dzong system built in Bhutan by Shebdrung Nawang Namgyal in the year 1637. The Dzong is said to be the most beautiful of Dzong in Bhutan; it is an outstanding structure with intense artwork.
    After lunch short hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten in the northern part of the valley. Newly built and it is a more elaborate version of the Memorial Chorten in Thimphu. It has an astounding work of frescoes and intricate statues.

  • Day 6 : Punakha - Trongsa Distance - 129 KM.Driving - 6 Hours. Altitude: 5280ft/2200.Meters

    Drive to Trongsa (129km/ 4hours). On the way drive to Phobjikha valley which is surely one of the loveliest high altitude valleys in Bhutan. Phobjikha is one of Bhutan’s few glacial valleys, and chosen winter home of black necked cranes, migrating from the Tibetan plateau. Visit the 17th century Gangtey Gompa, the only Nyingmapa monastery in western Bhutan and it houses about 200 monks. Then drive back to Pelela pass (3300m), this pass offers great view of Himalayan villages like Rukubji and Chendebji, and it is also the main land mark between east & west.

  • Day 7 : Trongsa - Bumthang

    In the morning visit Trongsa Dzong and the Watch tower (now a museum). Drive through Trongsa town to the broad & beautiful valley of Bumthang. Bumthang is general name for the four valleys of Ura, Chumey, Tang and Chokhor and is considered to be one of the most beautiful and sacred valleys of Bhutan. These four valleys of Bumthang are dotted with temples, monasteries, prayer flag and stupas. Wherever you visit, myth, legend, folktale and superstition surround you. The traditional stone houses with colorful paintings, intricately carved wooden structures and lush evergreen conifer forest add to the beauty and charm. Lunch stop at Chumey Nature Resort and then the Bumthang sightseeing began from Chumey valley. Along the way you will stop at Domkhar Dzong, Kurchu village to see farm house and yathra (textile weaving) factory at Chumey, where the yathra are designed with patterns unique to Bumthang, and you can even watch some of the weavers at their looms.

  • Day 8 : Bumthang Sightseeing

    Morning visit to Jampa Lhakhang (another of the 108 temples built by King Songtsen Gampo), Kurjey Lhakhang (in 8th century Guru Rinpoche came to Bumthang and meditated, leaving JEY (imprint) of his KU (body) in the rock, hence the temple’s name is known as Kurjey) – 30 minutes for personal meditation. After that short hike to Tamzhing Lhakhang which is one of the most important Nyingma temples in the Kingdom. It was built by Terton Pema Lingpa in 1501 with the help of Khandroma (female celestial beings)], The inner walls contain the original unrestored images that were painted by Pema-Lingpa-himself. After Lunch visit Jakar Dzong and Old place of Wangdicholling. In evening, take a leisurely stroll through Bumthang market area.

  • Day 9 : Bumthang Sightseeing

    After early breakfast , drive through Tang Valley to have a short hike to Ugyencholling Palace. En route we will visit Tang Member Tsho (Burning Lake) from where Saint Pemalingpa had discovered several hidden treasures from the lake.

    In Ugyenchholing, we can see the palace which is also a museum and cluster of villages along the path. On the way back, visit the only Buddhist Institute which provides degree in Buddhist philosophy for women which was founded by 9th Gangtey Tulku Rinpoche, the present reincarnation of Saint Pemalingpa.

  • Day 10 : Bumthang - Mongar

    After breakfast drive across pine forests leaving behind the Bumthang valley. Gradually ascend Sheltheng La (3600m). On a clear day, one can see the snow capped mountain, Gankar Puensum(7541m), the highest peak in Bhutan. The vegetation changes from alpine to subtropical as you pass through Sengor valley, watching cascading waterfall along the way and cross Kuri Chu river. A gradual ascend again takes you through pine forests and maize fields. Arrive Mongar and check into your hotel . Enroute picnic lunch. Evening, explore Mongar town.

  • Day 11 : Mongar - Trashigang

    Distance - 90KM.Driving - 3.5 Hours. Altitude: 3,775ft/1151Meters.

    In morning, visit Yalang Lhakhang, Wenkhar (community farming center), and a typical local farmhouse where wine is brewed from corn and maize. After lunch, drive to Trashigang through lush valley of Yadi, filled with ferns, corn fields and banana groves. Trashigang is perched on the steep hillside above Gamri River. Evening, visit Trashigang Dzong and take a stroll around the town.

  • Day 12 : Trashigang (Excursion to Trashi Yangtse)

    Distance – 51KM.Driving – 2 Hours. Altitude: 5904ft/1800Meters.

    Drive to Trashi Yangtse (53km/ 1hr,30mins). Enroute visit Gom Kora (holy temple famous for its festival held annually) and Doksum village known for its traditional fabric. After lunch in Trashi Yangtse, visit the famous Chorten Kora (huge Stupa), Art School and Trashi Yangtse Dzong. Evening, return to Trashigang.

  • Day 13 : Trashigang - Samdrup Jongkhar

    Distance - 180KM.Driving - 6 Hours.

    Picnic lunch is provided. Begin a breathtaking drive unlike any other you've experienced through eastern villages and satellite towns, alongside sheer drops and scenic views. Enroute visit Sherubtse College in Kanglung, Handloom and Blind School in Khaling. Now you are in the sub-tropical zone. Change of weather from alpine to sub tropical when you reach Samdrup Jongkhar. Evening, stroll around the town. Celebrate your last day in Bhutan with your guide.

  • Day 14 : Samdrup Jongkhar to Guwahati

    After breakfast, Our Indian Counterpart will take you through the plains of Assam towards Guwahati and the entire drive is in the plains. Time to explore Guwahati city.
