The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, located amidst lush plantations and dense forests, is one of the world’s most captivating natural wildlife reserves. Spanning 777 sq. km, of which 360 sq. km consists of thick evergreen forest, it was declared a tiger reserve in 1978.
The picturesque artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam enhances the beauty of the sanctuary. It is also the only reserve in India where visitors can enjoy the unique experience of spotting wildlife up close from the safety of a boat on the lake.

En route, visit the historic Padmanabhapuram Palace, once the seat of the Travancore kings. Built in traditional Kerala architectural style using wood and stone, the palace was reconstructed around 1750 by Marthanda Varma. It served as the capital of the Travancore kingdom until 1795, when Thiruvananthapuram became the new capital. Today, it stands as a beautifully preserved testament to the region’s royal heritage.
Continue to Kanyakumari for sightseeing, beginning with the revered Kumari Amman Temple, dedicated to Goddess Parvati in her form as Devi Kanya.
