The city of Udaipur in Rajasthan served as the capital of the erstwhile state of Mewar. Maharana Uday Singh founded this city in 1553 and gave Udaipur its name. It has been called the ‘City of Lakes’ and ‘Venice of the East’. Apart from lakes, the historic palaces of this city are also very famous for their majestic beauty. This city is a very popular tourist destination among westerners and Indians both. The Bond movie, Octopussy, was shot here, particularly at the Monsoon Palace and Lake Palace.

Udaipur is situated in the Southern region of Rajasthan, surrounded by Aravalli Mountains. The average elevation of land is 598m. The city has six major lakes that add to the beauty. Except for April to August, the temperature is moderate here. By evening the city gets a very pleasant weather with a cool breeze blowing ocassionally. Winter days are also warm but with chilly nights. Monsoon from June to September gives moderate to heavy showers.

Transportation

Udaipur is equipped with air, rail and road transports with frequent travel facilities to and from major cities.

Air: The Maharana Pratap Airport is 24km away from the city centre and has daily flights to Delhi, Mumbai and Jaipur.

Rail: The Udaipur railway line has recently been made a broad gauge line. The railway station has trains from Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Mumbai.

Roadways: The city is connected with Golden Quadrilateral through NH8. Most towns of Rajasthan have buses to reach here.

Local Transport: To move around the city it is best to hire autos, rent bicycles or take a cab service. Horse carts can also be used as a cheap mode of travel.

The city is famous for its handicrafts, marble products, terracotta art form, pottery, jewellery, wooden toys, antique items and paintings. Hathi Pol, Bada Bazaar, Chetak Circle, Bada Bazaar and Palace Road are some well-known shopping venues.
