Mount Kenya, Kenya’s highest mountain, offers a spectacular trekking experience through dense mountain forest, bamboo and moorland, dramatic valleys, alpine landscapes and high-altitude summit terrain. This traverse begins on the scenic Chogoria side, passes through Lake Ellis and Gorges Valley, reaches Point Lenana at 4,985 m, and descends via the Sirimon Route. The route combines varied scenery with a gradual approach to altitude. Key landscapes and features include Nithi Waterfalls, Lake Ellis, Gorges Valley, Hall Tarns/Mintos, Point Lenana, Shipton’s Camp and the Sirimon descent toward Nanyuki.
Elevation: Chogoria Town 2,100 m | Anabas Camp 2,950 m Trekking Distance: Approximately 10 km Trekking Time: 3–4 hours Vegetation Zone: Mountain Forest / Treeline Overnight: Anabas Camp Meals: Lunch & Dinner Arrive in Chogoria Town at approximately 2,100 m, where the final preparations for the trek are completed. From town, continue to the Chogoria Lower Gate for park registration and entry formalities. From the gate, continue to the trekking starting point and begin the gradual ascent through the mountain forest toward Anabas Camp. The trail passes through the forest and gradually enters the higher treeline zone. Upon arrival at camp, settle in, rest and enjoy the mountain surroundings. A warm meal is served at camp, with time to relax around the campfire before overnight.

Elevation: Anabas 2,950 m | Nithi Waterfalls 3,200 m | Roadhead 3,300 m | Lake Ellis 3,450 m Trekking Distance: Approximately 12 km Trekking Time: 6–7 hours Vegetation Zone: Heather / Upper Moorland Overnight: Lake Ellis Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner After breakfast, continue higher through the moorland toward Nithi Waterfalls, located at approximately 3,200 m. The trail then continues toward the roadhead at around 3,300 m before proceeding to Lake Ellis at 3,450 m. Lake Ellis provides a peaceful high-altitude setting surrounded by the distinctive landscapes of Mount Kenya. After arriving at camp, enjoy a hot lunch and take time to rest. The afternoon can be spent on a relaxed walk around the lake, sightseeing or trout fishing where conditions and park regulations permit. Tea, coffee or hot chocolate with snacks is served later, followed by dinner and overnight at camp.

The route gradually gains altitude as the landscape changes from moorland into the alpine environment of the upper mountain. The day's trek is designed to allow a steady and controlled ascent. On reaching the Hall Tarns/Mintos area at around 4,200 m, settle into camp, have a warm meal and rest. The afternoon is kept relatively relaxed to support acclimatization ahead of the summit attempt. Hydration, a slow walking pace and adequate rest are encouraged.

The ascent is made at a slow, steady pace, allowing the group to reach the summit around sunrise, approximately 6:30 am, depending on conditions and pace. At Point Lenana, enjoy the panoramic views across the surrounding peaks and landscapes before beginning the descent toward Shipton’s Camp. A full breakfast is served at Shipton’s before continuing toward Likii North. Lunch is served along the route or at Likii North, followed by time to rest and recover from the summit day. Later, enjoy tea, coffee or hot chocolate with snacks before dinner and overnight at camp.

Elevation: Likii North ~3,990 m | Old Moses 3,300 m | Sirimon Gate 2,650 m Trekking Distance: Approximately 10 km on foot, followed by vehicle transfer Trekking Time: 3–4 hours trekking Vegetation Zone: Moorland / Lower Mountain Forest / Highland Zone Overnight: End of Trek Meals: Breakfast & Lunch After breakfast, begin the descent from Likii North toward Old Moses and continue to the Sirimon Gate. The trail gradually moves through the moorland and lower mountain forest as the altitude decreases. At Sirimon Gate, complete the park exit formalities and meet the vehicle for the transfer toward Nanyuki. The trek officially ends upon arrival in Nanyuki, where you can continue with your onward travel arrangements.
