Overview
The trek begins at Manikaran and winds along the raging Parvati River. As you gain altitude, you would have spectacular views of the mountains. Parvati valley is also known as the valley of flower and this trek through thick pine forest and fields of wild flowers - a profusion of iris, buttercups, poppies, phulumises and edelweiss will take you up to the Mantlali Lake which is the source of Parvati River
Our trek starts from Kasol, though we follow the trail leading to Pin Parvati Pass, we trek only up to Mantalai, the source of River Parvati. Following the Parvati River, the trail passes through forests of rhododendrons, fir, and birch and then enters vast green pastures. We continue walking further and begin to feel the transition in the landscape as we enter the moraines, glaciers. The high altitude glacial lake at Mantalai is surrounded by snow-capped mountains on three sides.
Mantalai Lake Trek. The Parvati valley, just like the Kullu valley, is one of the most beautiful valleys that you will ever see. It stands up to its name, representing the legendary beauty of Goddess Parvati, the divine consort of Lord Shiva, almost perfectly on the earthly plane. With lush green hills covered with Pine and Deodar.
Day 1 : Arrival to Kasol
Arrival in Kasol and spend the day at Kasol. Kasol is a small village, so small that one can walk the two ends in half an hour. Well kept streets, simple houses and smiling local people. Set in the centre of one of the most attractive states of India – Himachal Pradesh. Most of the tourist traffic rushes past, oblivious to the presence of this absolutely marvelous village. Manikaran, 5 km away is the next major spot. It has hot water springs and a highly revered Gurdwara of the Sikh pantheon. Overnight stay in Kasol.
Day 2 : Kasol - Barsheni (2 hrs); Trek to Khir Ganga (2850m/9351 ft; 11 Km; 4 hrs)
Post breakfast we leave for Barsheni the road end from where our trek will commence. Trek starts… Barsheni – Khir Ganga. The valley narrows down as we descend through the village. The trail goes through dense forests and a steady ascent with some steep stretches takes one to Khir Ganga. A few minutes’ walk to the hot springs here is recommended. Dinner and overnight stay at camp in Khir Ganga.
Day 3 : Khir Ganga - Tunda Bhuj (3205m/10,516 ft; 13 Km; 5 hrs)
The trail stays on the left bank of the river and initially moves through a forest of rhododendrons, fir and birch and then we reach open pastures. The campsite of Tunda Bhuj is on a steep sided meadow and offers spectacular views of the waterfalls cascading down from the shiny black rocks across the valley. Dinner and overnight stay at camp in Tunda Bhuj.
Day 4 : Tunda Bhuj - Thakur Kuan (3400m/11,155 ft; 7 Km; 3 hrs)
Initially the path rises, crosses a stream and heads down to the Parvati riverbank. The trail descends via a narrow and slippery path to the valley floor. Walk close to the river to reach the Niabdhuduari Thach where the tree line ends. We continue to climb the cliff using our hands for support and clear the few rocky patches to reach our campsite at Thakur Kuan. The meadow is bedecked with flowers depending upon the season. Dinner and overnight stay at camp Thakur Kuan.
Day 5 : Thakur Kuan - Odi Thach (3815m/12,517 ft; 5 hrs)
Flat gradual walk in the beginning. Glimpses of many glaciers that are the source of River Parvati, start appearing to the right of the valley, now we begin to feel the change in the landscape. From the lush green forests and meadows we now enter into mountains, glaciers and moraines. From Odi Thach, we get a striking view of snow-capped mountains. Dinner and overnight stay at camp in Odi Thach.
Day 6 : Odi Thach - Base of Mantalai (5-6 hrs)
A gentle walk on flat ground, then a stream you have to cross by hopping over boulders, and you are standing just below the towering massif of Kullu Eiger. The trail continues its moderate climb staying close to the soft flow of the Parbati, going past a few shepherds’ encampments. Dinner and overnight stay at camp in Base of Mantalai.
Day 7 : Base of Mantalai - Excursion to Mantalai Lake (4070m/13,354 ft) (3-4 hrs to & fro)
Post an early breakfast an hour-long ascent takes you away from the Gaddi shepherds to climb over the debris of a moraine descending from a side glacier to finally reach the Mantalai Lake. The lake has been formed by the glacial moraine. We come back to our campsite for hot lunch. Dinner and overnight stay at camp in Base of Mantalai.
Day 8 : Base of Mantalai - Thakur Kuan (6-7 hrs)
Dinner and overnight stay at camp in Thakur Kuan.
Day 9 : Thakur Kuan - Khir Ganga (6-7 hrs)
Dinner and overnight stay at camp in Khir Ganga.
Day 10 : Khir Ganga - Barsheni (3-4 hrs); Drive to Kullu (3 hrs)
