Day wise Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Marrakech to Ait Bougmez

Your adventure starts just outside your hotel in Marrakech. We’ll greet you, introduce ourselves, and then begin the first part of our journey east from the city, through the olive groves, and into the High Atlas Mountains. We’ll visit the walled town of Demnate before continuing on up to the waterfalls of Ouzoud and the pretty market town of Azilal. From there, we travel on to the tranquil and lush valley of Ait Bougmez, also known as the Happy Valley due to the nature of the locals. We’ll then meet with some of the Berbers and spend the night as guests in one of the family homes.

  • Day 2 : Ait Bougmez to Imilchil

Once we’ve had breakfast, we’ll leave Ait Bougmez and head up over the high mountain passes to see the stunning panoramic views, before heading over to the bustling market town of Ait M’hamed.

The scenery opens out into wider views as we descend to cross the Bin El Ouidane Dam at the head of an extraordinary lake. This area has some incredible views, so we’ll stop off for some photos before continuing on our journey.

We travel off-road back into the mountains again to arrive at the famous Berber village of Imilchil, a small and tranquil location surrounded by dramatic peaks. Here, the young women of the Ait Hadidou tribe traditionally choose their own husbands at a Marriage Festival (the Fête des Fiançailles) each August, accompanied by extensive souks (markets) and a carnival atmosphere. We’ll stay here overnight and experience the hospitality of the Berbers.

  • Day 3 : Imilchil to Agoudal

We’ll spend the day relaxing, exploring, walking, taking photographs, and (if you like) wild swimming in the midst of this wonderful scenery.

Once we’re ready, we’ll say goodbye to the locals and start the drive down to the Plateau of the twin Lakes Tislit and Isli (known locally as the Bride and Groom). Reflecting the sky and the mountains in the crystal clear waters, their names come from an ancient story of two star-crossed lovers, whom each wept enough tears to create the lakes. This is an incredibly peaceful place, where we’ll stop and admire the view for some time. Once you’re ready, we’ll then continue to Agoudal and spend the night in a Berber guesthouse.

  • Day 4 : Agoudal to the Dades Gorges

After breakfast, we head off-road from Agoudal and head along winding mountain roads to Ait Hani, an elegant town on a broad plateau with a lovely mountain backdrop. More panoramic scenery brings us to Tamtattouchte with its lovely white-painted marabout (pilgrimage chapel) beyond the town.

From here the road descends through the famous Todgha Gorge with its towering cliffs. Beyond the gorge, we pass through the lovely palm oasis of Tinghir and head across the plain. We’ll have views of the Jebel Sahro mountains while sheep, goats, and even camels graze near the road. We arrive at the Dades Valley in the late afternoon as the sun begins to light up the spectacular red rock formations which the locals say resemble a monkey’s fingers. We’ll spend the night in the Dades Gorge.

  • Day 5 : Dades Valley to N’kob

After breakfast, we descend into the lush green Dades Valley, known as the road of a thousand kasbahs, passing the the Monkey’s Fingers again and then across the plains towards the Jebel Sahro. From here we head off-road into the high peaks and view some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in Morocco.

We’ll continue over the Tizi-n-Tazazert Pass which giving spectacular views of the Bab‘n Ali pinnacles, amazing gorges, and dramatic rock formations, before gradually descending towards N’kob. We’ll see numerous kasbahs and stunning views all the way back to the Jebel Sahro, where we will stay for the night.

  • Day 6 : N’kob to Chigaga Dunes

After breakfast, we start the next leg of our journey through the Draa Valley to Zagora. On the way, we’ll pass many villages and gardens that give you a taste of the local lifestyle.

We drive to M’hamid (known as the gate to the desert) before stopping stop for lunch, then continue to the Erg Chigaga dunes. This route goes through different areas of the desert including erg, reg, hammada, and oases. These dunes are extremely remote and can be quite a humbling experience. The vast expanse and total silence of the sand is overwhelming but peaceful.

  • Day 7 : Chigaga dunes to Ouarzazate

In the early morning, we’ll have breakfast before heading off for a two-hour long camel ride to the top of a dune to watch the desert sunrise, a spectacle of colours and shadows.

We then head back to the camp and continue our journey across 90 km of desert, passing Lake Iriqui and the surrounding mountains. This is an excellent spot for fossil hunting, which we’ll stop and do for a little while.

We’ll then head towards the first village beyond the desert, Foum Zguid, for lunch, then continue on to Ouarzazate, via Taznakht, famous for its handmade carpets and rugs.

We’ll stay the night at Ouarzazate.

  • Day 8 : Ouarzazate to Marrakech

After breakfast, we head towards the kasbah of Taourirt, originally the residence of the former Pasha of Marrakech and a symbol of the feudal period of the Atlas lords.

Afterwards, we head in the direction of Kasbah Ait Benhaddou, where we will have lunch. In the afternoon, we revisit the Kasbah before leaving through Ounila valley to the Kasbah of Telouet which served as a palatial residence and the headquarters of the powerful Glaoui tribe. We then continue on the last leg of our journey through the High Atlas Mountains to Marrakech where we’ll say our goodbyes and give our best wishes!
